Dominique Brown (Louisville signee)

The star quarterback can score, too
By Kyle Nagel | Saturday, January 16, 2010

Dominique Brown was already a notable athlete after leading the Winton Woods football team to a Division II state championship last month as its quarterback.

On the basketball court, the 6-4, 220-pound senior was just as clutch on Saturday, Jan. 16.

Brown scored the final baskets for Winton Woods in both regulation and overtime to help the Warriors to a 72-70 victory against Garfield Heights at Trent Arena. He finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds, but he was sought-after following the game for more than this basketball skills.

After a reporter asked Brown two questions about the game, he turned to the others gathered and said, ?Does anyone have anything else about the game?? No one did.

That?s because Brown dropped his football commitment to Cincinnati when coach Brian Kelly left for Notre Dame and has since become a hot recruit. Ohio State offered him a scholarship late this week, and others are asking for his services.

Brown said he likely won?t sign his letter of intent on Feb. 3, the first day allowed, and instead make a few campus visits during the month before deciding.

He said his suitors include Ohio State, UC, Hawaii, Georgia Tech and others. Asked which schools he was likely visit, Brown said he didn?t know.

?I?m definitely going to Hawaii,? he said to a round of laughs.

I'm very confused by the measurement for his height? I have seen from 6'2" TO 6'4"?

Height inflation is obviously pretty common in football, as the actual height of players is usually an inch or inch-and-a-half less than what is listed. Basketball, however, takes that to a new level, as the listed heights are usually at least two inches greater than they actually are. Thus, I'd imagine his actual height is somewhere in the 6-1.5 to 6-2 range.

Winton Woods football hero turns to basketball to get win over Garfield Heights
Tim Rogers / Plain Dealer Reporter, January 16, 2010

KETTERING, Ohio -- Dominique Brown laughed at the question, a loud, boisterous laugh that turned heads as it echoed through the back hallway of James S. Trent Arena.

"No, I don't have anything against teams from Cleveland," Brown said. "They just happened to be the teams we were playing."

On Saturday in the eighth annual Flyin' to the Hoop boys basketball tournament, Brown demoralized Garfield Heights similar to the way he demoralized Maple Heights last month in the Division II state championship football game.

Brown, a 6-4, 220-pound senior, scored on a layup with four seconds remaining in overtime to give Winton Woods a 72-70 victory.

Scoring off a number of athletic moves and using his strength and quickness around the basket, Brown scored a game-high 23 points and had a game-high 12 rebounds -- seven on the defensive end.

A little more than six weeks ago, Brown, then the quarterback and a Cincinnati recruit, ran for 172 yards on 20 carries and scored four touchdowns in leading the Warriors to a 42-14 victory over Maple Heights.

"I told my teammates, this is just like football," said Brown, who withdrew his oral commitment to Cincinnati following the departure of coach Brian Kelly. "It might not be my team, but I still want the ball in pressure situations."

The basketball Warriors (9-0) are regarded as Allen Payne's team. Payne, an Auburn recruit, finished with 18 points and six rebounds and served up the game-winning assist to Brown, who said he has been offered football scholarships by Ohio State, Michigan, Georgia Tech, Louisville and Hawaii, among others.

Charles Barkley being listed as 6-7 was the pinnacle of this nonsense. No way he's more than 6-2.5, which makes his career as an NBA power forward all the more amazing.

I remember seeing big Chuck standing beside Dr. J after a game early in his pro career and they were virtually the same height. Of course Dr. J was listed at 6'6", but it was widely held that he was actually 6'3.5". Wouldn't surprise me with all that extra "muscle" he is packing, and the effects of gravity, if Chuck hasn't lost an inch or two over the last twenty years.
