This isn't part of my diet, is it?

It is once a year for me.

Got some rather startling test results back on my cholesterol and triglycerides this week. Hence I am now on a low dose of Lipitor to reduce things. My good cholesterol is great, but my bad is bad and my triglycerides skyrocketed for some reason this past year. I have been exercising tremendously and eating well, at least I thought. I am definitely really watching my food now and also cutting my alcohol back. I love craft beers so this is difficult.......

It's unfortunate that Lipitor (and others like it) don't differentiate the type of cholesterol they try to remove.

My understanding is they block the cholesterol that your body makes as opposed to doing anything with the cholesterol that you put in your body. So, I would assume your body makes good and bad?
Not sure how bad it is....not surprised they went straight to Lipitor ... I would research plant sterols, and depending on the study red yeast rice. If you just need a little bit to help our something like those would work, they end up blocking the cholesterol you eat... My two cents, doctors are way to quick to reach for the prescription pad.

Thanks Muffler, very interesting article. It is certainly not my intent to be on them long term. I have been doing fish oil up until now as my LDL has been up a bit for 2 years. The concern and move came from a size able increase in both LDL and triglycerides this time around. It is a relatively low dose and I am working on the diet. Interestingly no red rice with statins from what I read.

You're welcome. FWIW, I didn't share to judge or make you feel bad. Cholesterol tests and doctors that prescribe statins just have been in my mind a lot for a few years. My former physician in Oregon really educated me on some things, and I truly appreciate that he took the time to help me understand better.
Another thing that you can request that your physician evaluate is to get a VAP test. If you're doctor is aware of this test, then it shouldn't be any problem. If not, then it may take some coaxing and unfortunately, he/she may not be the right one to interpret the results. This is a more explicit test that actually helps determine where you're at at that moment as well as whether your LDL is light and fluffy (which means it can be removed easy) or if it's dense (which would be the more negative side).

No worries Muffler, I took no offense whatever and really appreciate the information. I don't like taking medications. I watched my dad take a number of prescriptions with one designed to counteract the affects of the other. That will not be me. There is so much more information available today and any assistance cutting through the crap to find good information is awesome.

Not sure quite what's going on with my weight

So some history since it's been a while

Entering August I weighed 232, came up to Ohio, had some grandma's cooking for a week, came home, month later came up for Va Tech game, ended up weighing high 230s when all said and done. For about 2 months, I bounced from 235-240, usually closer to 235. Beginning of November I decide to get some personal training from one of the trainers at my work. Cool guy, did some MMA fighting for a little bit. I go with him 3 times a week, and go to the gym on my own 2-3 days a week, so I'm working out a lot. We do some ridiculous training, one day is weight lifting, another day is crossfit style training (lifting sand bags, box jumps, rope swings, planks, etc). And I can see muscle being built in my arms and getting bigger, especially my biceps.

But my weight is now 243. I know muscle weighs more than fat, and all that jazz. But I would have thought I would still have burned a lot of fat to where i'd still be going down in my weight instead of up. I have a hard time believing i've built so much muscle already i've gained 6 lbs without losing much fat (I mean I still do have a lot of fat to burn) Last time I checked my body fat % was 26%

And I know my diet isn't bad enough to cause a cancellation in my workouts, just no way i'm eating that many calories
