Diet-Fitness-General Wellness Your Thoughts?

Not sure quite what's going on with my weight

So some history since it's been a while

Entering August I weighed 232, came up to Ohio, had some grandma's cooking for a week, came home, month later came up for Va Tech game, ended up weighing high 230s when all said and done. For about 2 months, I bounced from 235-240, usually closer to 235. Beginning of November I decide to get some personal training from one of the trainers at my work. Cool guy, did some MMA fighting for a little bit. I go with him 3 times a week, and go to the gym on my own 2-3 days a week, so I'm working out a lot. We do some ridiculous training, one day is weight lifting, another day is crossfit style training (lifting sand bags, box jumps, rope swings, planks, etc). And I can see muscle being built in my arms and getting bigger, especially my biceps.

But my weight is now 243. I know muscle weighs more than fat, and all that jazz. But I would have thought I would still have burned a lot of fat to where i'd still be going down in my weight instead of up. I have a hard time believing i've built so much muscle already i've gained 6 lbs without losing much fat (I mean I still do have a lot of fat to burn) Last time I checked my body fat % was 26%

And I know my diet isn't bad enough to cause a cancellation in my workouts, just no way i'm eating that many calories

You're probably retaining water as part of your muscle recovery process in your body... looks like you're what, 6 weeks into this? (apologies if I got that wrong) but you're doing a lot of different stuff if not more stuff, so you're probably acclimating to that, once you kind of "plateau" into that routine you're doing (which may not really happen since there's a lot of variation) or, you lose some actual fat ahead of the muscles recovering/building, the scale will catch up to what you're body is doing.

You can probably sit on your butt for the next 10 or 14 days and it will re-normalize and you'll "lose" 10-12 lbs. (or at least the 8)

My guess is you should keep doing what you're doing though, it'll work out.

(Might want to think about if you're nutrition needs are where they need to be with the extra work, too. I have to focus on that when I get into more than 3 days in a row, etc, but I'm old)

Continuing my lifelong trend of doing things the most difficult way possible, I recently got back into the Army (part-time this go around) after a 6 year hiatus and agreed to accept training orders for January. January 10th I must report to Fort Benning, Ga. The problem is that during my six year lay off, and primarily over the last year, I became a fatty. The week of Thanksgiving I was 25 pounds over where I needed to be with 6 weeks to lose said weight. Losing weight during the holidays, especially while working 55-60 hours per week sucks, but I have only 7 more pounds to go with just over 2 weeks to go. Not there yet, but I'm making progress.

That shit is gonna seriously cut into your fishing time.

(Thank you for your service.... Dumbass . )

Ok folks... I'm looking for a fitness tracker... I bought a Fitbit Charge HR and it does alright... my biggest complaint about it. Its wide and I can't really wear it with a watch.. and if I shift it to my dominate arm.. I kinda look like a douche canoe with two bracelets on.

I'd like one that's thinner that I could pair with a chest HR monitor. I looked at the Garmin Vivosmart (same size as the fitbit) and the Polar Loop. Polar intrigues me but the band itself is cheap and you have to cut it to size. I think the Jawbone UP3 is the best of both worlds but thats already been delayed and the company might be going under.

anyone got any thoughts on this? or are these things just a waste of money like I suspect

Yet another:

http://news.yahoo.com/eat-fat-lose-weight-041634455.html

It’s the jolting headline that will make your taste buds jump for joy. Foods high in cholesterol may not be bad for your heart after all. After years of warning consumers to cut down on cholesterol, found in eggs, shellfish, butter and beef, the nutrition community has come full circle.
A new draft of a report from the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee contains a monumental shift in warnings first issued nearly four decades ago, suggesting that cholesterol no longer needs to be viewed as a “nutrient of concern.”
The announcement is viewed as vindication for Nina Teicholz, author of the 2014 best-selling book “The Big Fat Surprise: Why Butter, Meat, and Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet.” Teicholz broke with conventional wisdom and angered many in the medical community by writing that through years of research, she concluded that not only was cholesterol wrongly linked to heart disease, but foods high in saturated fats, such as butter, eggs and beef, were also falsely labeled as heart unhealthy. The former vegetarian now practices what she preaches and has changed the way she and her family eat. Breakfast consists of eggs and bacon; cheese is a staple, as is lard. Gone are foods high in carbs and sugar. Teicholz invited Yahoo News into her kitchen just days before the stunning announcement from the nutrition advisory panel and predicted that more findings like these would be coming soon.

i've gained about 10 lbs over the past few months

but majority is muscle as I can tell from pictures that I look slimmer in stomach and face areas, and bulky in my arms

Got a trainer, who's a former MMA fighter, and he's been teaching me how to box which has been a great workout

I just got a Soleus Go. My Fitbit Flex died after a year and a half and I didn't want to drop the coin for one of the newer ones. This does a lot of what the newer Fitbit models do for a lot less when you get it on sale. Hardware is good, but the Fitbit app was much better. You have to manually sync it for fitness, but it automatically alerts to calls and texts so it doesn't really make sense. Not bad if you can get it for $50.
