Devin Gardner (official thread)

OK....I've seen a few posts about how good this kid is supposed to be this year in other peoples' threads and I bit my tongue because it wasn't the right place for it. But I've now seen one too many.

This kid is not that good. I'm going to love watching him fall on his face while all the Michigan fans act completely surprised and wonder what happened to the super human they built him up to be for some unknown reason. It's like they didn't even watch him last year at all. Anything remotely positive from them against us last year was either a greased up Denard or defensive penalties. Did he do anything against us last year? This is going to be fun to watch.

Watching the replay of The Game on BTN, it's pretty apparent that he has absolutely no touch or accuracy on the deep ball... and he doesn't have any receivers that are deep threats in the first place.

Unless Derrick Green is the second coming of Maurice Clarett, they are in big, big trouble this season in my opinion.

What do you guys expect a QB on any team to say? Yes we are mediocre team this year, just like the past 5 years. We expect to get beat again by our rival and go to a shitty bowl:biggrin:

Hoke Record

19-7 his first two years with RR recruited talent, it's safe to say with the talent he has recruited Gardner and Hoke should do better than 19-7.

Is it safe to say the talent is better? I have to see it on the field first. You have a walk-on Glasgow pushing for the starting job at Center. Kyle Kalis is struggling to grab hold of the starting job.

13 highly rated OL in 3 recruiting classes but the problem is usually only 5 play at a time. That's a lot of 4-5 stars riding pine.

Guys like Shane Morris that should have been 3 stars.

I gonna watch and see what Michigan can do. I think your an injury to Gardner away from missing a bowl game in 2013 and 2014. With Gardner healthy you have no weapon he can use.

Outside of Peppers and Harris you can have your 2014 class. IMO you have several reaches in the bottom half of that class.

OSU is pulling away from you talent wise like a rocket.

I think there is a better than average chance that Hoke is on track to be the next Lloyd Carr or Mack Brown.

Those two have shown pretty conclusively that arrogance and entitlement will take even the best talent to 9-3 seasons consistently.

So 19-7 seems to be right on track, actually- unless you have Vince Young or Colt McCoy waiting in the wings as your starting QB.

Is he the next Vince Young?

Is he the next Colt McCoy?

I don't think that is very likely.

Can I ask what happens in Braxton gets hurt? Yes, most college teams if their starting QB gets hurt are in a bit of trouble.

I think Devin is pretty solid. He escapes pressure well and has a big arm. Accuracy is pretty bad but I think with scUM focusing solely on him as their QB, he can be better than average.

The bigger issue is their lack of playmakers. Jeremy Gallon is good, and that tight end Funchess (sp?) is also solid. That's literally it. Nothing.

You sure can. Kenny Guiton comes in and wins the game like he did last year. He not only needed a TD but needed to complete a 2 point conversion to take it to overtime. Guiton will be revered long after he is gone for what he did last year. Having Guiton is a luxury no team in the conference but NW has...2 competent QB's. If you want to compare Guiton to Cleary or Morris your delusional.

Wait till you see it on the field. Remember the name Dontre Wilson...there are others. Your team is overrated. Enjoy mediocrity.

It'll be interesting to see how Darboh and Chesson step up at WR. They are getting high praise. If they can live up to the coach speak, it'll take a lot of pressure off Gallon being the only real threat.

I think Gardner should have a solid season, and with Robinson gone, the coaches don't have to worry about getting him touches and can focus on Gardner. With the limited game time he had last season, I think he did pretty well. Now with a full summer and spring and now fall camp as the sole QB, I think he's going to be just fine.

I DON'T think he's going to be pushing for a Heisman or anything, but I think he can be a top 3 QB in the B1G

We'll be in a helluva lot better shape than if Gardner goes down.

Braxton WAS the offense for the first half of 2012.

Kenny Guiton won't need to carry the team on his back with the crazy amount of talent Urban has collected. Just distributing the ball to the play makers will be more than enough to make it through the regular season, and Guiton is plenty capable of that.

I try to be objective when I evaluate most teams, and I was not terribly impressed by Devin. On the deep ball in particular his ball flutters and floats, and even on some intermediate routes there's just no pace on it. I think he gets away with this because of above-average accuracy. That and the fact that Michigan asked him to dink-and-dunk against every good team they played.

Only if he's improved his mechanics and pace significantly over the off-season can I see him having good games against the quality teams on Michigan's schedule.

I hate to break it to you, but the Buckeye's are over rated also.

Guiton did a great job coming in off the bench, will see what happens when he gets the start and a DC schemes to stop him.

A pissing match in regards to back-up QB's is stupid. However, the known in regards to Guiton is his ability to execute the offense. While he lacks the athleticism of Braxton, if Braxton could ever learn to read the read/option the way Kenny can he'd have the Heisman wrapped up before the season.

I think "Buckeye fan" is just extremely comfortable with Kenny in the game because he proved last year in multiple "in game situations" he can move the offense and distributes the ball exceptionally well. Would he take us to a 14-0 season? No way. Is he good enough to beat anyone on our regular season schedule? Absolutely.

I don't think Urban Meyer is over-stating it by much when he says he has the best back-up QB in the country. He isn't talking about a future NFL calibre player, he's talking about a guy who steps on the field and can execute the offense exactly how Meyer wants it to be run. And in many areas, better than Braxton. Braxton just happens to be a freak of nature that can turn any play into a home-run.

He completed 60% passes and had a rating of 161 after playing WR most of the year.
