Defensive Staff Next Year?

The youth at LB might have hurt the Bucks as much as any other factor.

There should be a competent MAC DC (idk, Toledo seemed decent this year) we could bring on as a position coach. Then make him DC when Ash bolts and hope he sticks around a while, like Heacock.

I'm hoping for some loyalty.
Loyalty is fleeting in CFB. Be happy to have guys a few years and they leave to get paid like in any industry. There's always young hungry guys willing to coach at OSU(i.e Barnes,, Day or Hartline), or coaches looking to rehab their careers(Wilson, and to an extent LJsr)

Post-Barnes makeover, the only problem I see is a D-line that couldn't pressure the quarterback without blitz help. Sawyer and Williams showed flashes, but we are gonna need a huge step forward to improve with who we are losing on that unit.

The secondary and backers actually progressed pretty well. I don't think we need to make wholesale changes, though I can't see Coombs wanting to hang around.

There’s lower level conference guys littered everywhere that have interesting schemes. I’m partial to Chadd Skaggs who for second straight year has really been able to dial up pressure with unique looks at Coastal Carolina.

It seems to me Day has pretty solid NFL relationships and would expect any new blood to likely come down from NFL to add a new set of eyes.

I think we will see some changes though.

Beyond defense it’s critical they revamp our offensive line and get back to the drive off ball where guys are getting to second level to create explosive run plays…..just didn’t see that at all this year. Henderson covered up so many issues with huge runs on his elite burst alone….

I think we will take a huge step forward by losing a number of guys on the DL, or playing them less...

Idk what you sew from the back 7, they looked terrible, especially the LBs! You have big development problems at LB, if a RB who just changed positions in Qgust is far and away your best LB. What happened to guys like Mitchell, Simon, TE? All looked average and got pushed away from the ball yesterday. Hickman wasn't schemed to help yesterday, and sorry but Shaw should be starting in the MAC not OSU. Brown and Banks are below average at best, Burke is so much better than them both and it ain't close. They would be addition by subtraction as well

So Combs ..?
I don't care who it is name-wise. I want a hungry young guy that can recruit, has shown the ability to develop players and isn't totally scheme dependent. Don't care where he comes from. Don't care where he went to school. Don't care if he likes mayo on his burger. I just want somebody that can make our defense feared, or at the very least respected again. For three of the last four years our defense has been largely a shit show. That has to stop if we want to regain supremacy in the B1G and legitimately challenge for NCs. Yesterday was the kind of event that should initiate a major shakeup. It exposed complacency and a catastrophic flaw that needs to be repaired. Not unlike the offensive staff after Clemson stomped us into sawdust 0-31.

Hate to sound like a broken record but I posit we need to realign the make up the staff.

That means Parker Fleming, who has done a good job has to go.
Never understood last year when Mattison left who chose to bump Barnes and elevate Fleming.

Sadly Coombs should go.

That would give a new DC potentially at least 2 coaches he could bring in with him.

As it stands right now I think LJ, Barnes (hand picked by Day), and Washington (hand picked and pleaded with to not take the Vols DC gig) are safe.

Wouldn’t be opposed if one of the new guys was brought in as an understudy for LJ.

To lazy to research but can’t believe there are many staffs where the HC is offensive minded and there are only 4 D assistants.

Day also needs to gain greater understanding of the interdependence between O & D.
His precious pass first offense is in part responsible for the soft underbelly on D.
