Defensive Staff Next Year?

Day also needs to gain greater understanding of the interdependence between O & D.
His precious pass first offense is in part responsible for the soft underbelly on D.

You lead with your offense or you lead with your defense. There are only two options.

Day has, correctly imo, chosen to lead with his offense. When you score a lot and score quickly, defense is going to suffer somewhat because it's on the field a lot. No big deal.
Defense getting pushed around at the LOS and not being able to execute a zone defense to save it's life isn't part of the give and take between the offense and defense.

From my seat a thousand miles away, I see a young guy in a leadership position (Day) who has chosen poorly in his attempts at delegation. Gene Smith, and maybe say Urban Meyer, need to help him find the right guy capable of taking over the entire defensive side of the program and getting it back on par with the rest of the program.

What I like is that Day seems in-tune with Buckeye Nation. He doesn’t try and sugar coat what the fans are seeing and stick with the same staff. I think he brought in Coombs because 95% of fans were clamoring for it, and he had a good track record.

I’m guessing changes will happen on staff. He need to take a serious look at what LJ provides without a Bosa or You g on the roster.

I think the DL has the same problem as everyone else, as exemplified most notably in Zach Harrison… he’s so worried about what his gap assignment is he rarely just plays… we need a d coordinator who allows the players to unleash their athleticism and attack sometimes instead of constantly trying to read and react to everything.

Part of that is probably completely shifting everything halfway through the year, but I think there absolutely needs to be some fresh minds on that defensive staff with a solid grasp of overall scheme who can call plays that lets the players play and not think.

Absolutely agree. He's got to find his "Ryan Day" for the defense.

I love Coombs and Barnes but they've not ran a defense before. IMO you can't cut your teeth at OSU and you need stability on that side of the ball.

We hit a home run with Hafley and ttun did the same with their DC but typically a 1st year coordinator is a bad idea at a major D1 school.

Bud Foster didn't have the talent eventually... I grew up near there and if Bud Foster was available he'd be my choice as well. He did so much with so little at Va Tech.
10 years ago, I'd agree. But hiring a 63 year old guy, who hasn't coached in 3 years and didn't exactly put strong defenses on the field over his last several years is not my idea of a "dynamic hire." The game evolves and guys who worked well a decade ago get passed by, especially as they age. I thought Foster retired because he wanted to enjoy his family before getting too old, so it's probably a moot point anyway.

Frankly, my preference would be a younger guy in his 30s to mid 40s. I'm not fond of the idea of hiring the "veteran/name coach" who was good years ago but hasn't done much lately. Give me an up and comer who is energetic, ambitious and loves to recruit. Don't want this...

My thoughts on the current staff ...

Coombs - love his passion, love his recruiting. Loved how he churned out elite DBs. All that said, his pay grade is too high, he's getting older, and he failed spectacularly as a DC. I think it's time to move on.

LJ - He was outstanding for a number of years. He recruits like a mother fucker. However, the last two years, his unit has underachieved on a massive scale relative their recruiting profiles. I don't know if that's a function of his coaching, or if he's recruiting the wrong guys. Neither is a better scenario than the other. He's going to be 70 soon. Thank him for all he has done and move on.

Washington - Simple fact here is our LB play has not been anywhere near the level we have grown accustomed to in the past. The LB play has ranged from "okay" to "blech" under him. I know Day wanted him back, but it's a results oriented business and he hasn't produced results. Move on.

Barnes - He stabilized what looked like a D that was on its way to being historically bad. However, the defense remained inconsistent even after he took over and was rag dolled in the Game. He had some handicaps coaching the safeties and is still young, so I wouldn't be totally against him getting another shot with the DBs.

Honestly, I'd just like a clean sweep. Start with a fresh slate. There's talent on this defense, they just aren't producing. Bring in a bright, young DC, let him pick his assistants. Open up the checkbook and get the best guys you can buy.

Clean sweeps are not the answer.

Especially in regards to recruiting.

Thats the profile I described.

That's fair. I can't disagree. It's quite possible I'm being reactionary. Maybe the issues all start at the top and a new DC with the right philosophy can get better results out of these guys. DC is the most important. Hire him and go from there.

Speaking of defensive recruiting; your two best are LJS and Coombs, neither of which are getting any younger. Al Washington is often referred to positively in recruiting but his unit has been underwhelming at best the past two years. I have no idea how Barnes does with recruiting but when we are talking staff restructuring, you are going to have to solve for more than just the scheme.

I think you will be wildly disappointed if you want to see “wholesale” changes.

Can’t see them asking LJ to move on.
Washington is unlikely after Day fought for him to stay at a significant pay difference.
Barnes was handpicked and put in a tough spot.

I could see Coombs not returning. He has been publicly emasculated.

The concerning thing is how Day choose to replace a high priced successful coach (Mattison) last year.
Bump Barnes and name a ST coach.
It was almost like it was a budget move.
