Defensive Staff Next Year?

Are we sure he’s “proven” though?

Notre Dame’s stats are pretty much identical to last year. And Cincinnati’s are pretty much identical to last year as well.

Can he turnaround a bad defense?

do you remember Cincinnati with Tuberville? he recruited those kids that are still there this year. so to used the identical stats of UC this year doesn’t say much to me. its still his core players. look at ND’s defense early this year to where it is now. they got a lot better and their LB’s play at a much higher level than OSU’s.

Freeman to OSU makes no sense for 1 reason only: he will be a head coach next year. either at ND or UC.

H&C.
I wouldn't rule out Duke.

I know it's hard to win there.
But it is a cool area, great school, and the ACC isn't a meat grinder.
I don't understand why it's so difficult.
It would be a chance for him to build a program with low expectations at the outset.
If he goes back to UC, what can he do to show he is above "replacement level". Especially given what Luke has done.
Really all of the recent coaches there have had decent success except Tubs (Kelly, Dantonio, Luke). I suppose it could be said it is a launching pad for a tier 1 gig.

But if it were my choice I would strongly consider Duke and the opportunity to build my own legacy.

Do you remember Freeman before Fickell? To me, he’s still in “prove it” territory. Learning from Fick is great, but he still hasn’t really done much outside of Fickell.

Nobody questioned his recruiting chops.

Complete hypothetical ...

Ryan Day jumps to the NFL

Who would be the top 3 options to replace him? I'm assuming....

1. Fick
2. Hartline
3. Freeman
4. Any spawn of Jim Tressel
Tressel style ball is pretty much Hairball style ball. Tressel probably would not do good today.

Fickel seems to have embraced a more open offense. He would probably be ok. Not sure. But he would respect the rivalry.

This is a tough one who would be the person.

Sounds nuts but I’d want Hafley (just signed 5 year extension at BC but not sure what buyout looks like).

Caveat being he has access to a badass OC since Day would be taking that talent with him to NFL.

Hafley is a stud recruiter, knows our current culture, and is great at defensive X’s and O’s. Certainly a huge jump up from BC but I’d be good with it.

Other upside is there’d be quite a bit of continuity with current staff which is huge. OC would be critical though.

Not that he'd want to leave Tennessee to dive back into the college game, but they at least make a call to Vrabel, right?

Very true, didn't even think about that option. Not sure how much he'd want to recruit but making 3x as much to go home and exit when Henry may be on his last legs wouldn't be a bad option.

He does at least have HC experience, so certainly a comparable option to Freeman (or maybe even a better one).
