Defending yourself in your home

And every handgun that kills a kid because the kid found it and shot him/herself or a playmate, and every spouse shot and killed instead of being beaten up because a gun was handier when their spouse or significant other went temporarily bat shit crazy would disagree with you - and be right.

Those who had no gun and were killed by intruders would disagree with them - and also be right. But until you look at the number of people killed by one scenario versus the other, you can lose the desert property ananogy...I mean, it is true that you might drown in a canal your car flips into, but it is a piss poor statistical reason not to wear seat belts.

I do not have stats on deaths and lives saved both ways, but somebody does, and just like seat belt use in light of a possible drowning, only one answer is a good choice to make. I would imagine that owning a gun in a high crime area is a better choice than a homeowner in a low crime area owning a gun.

BTW, I own guns.
What does all that have to do with defending yourself against intruders?

Too many butI only would worry about the one that I am in.

Okay. That didn't help at all. :p

How many of those "four or five" occur when the owner is home?

God help us all.

Actually, why d you need a gun? Won't your southern assailant just out-run the bullet?

Actually, the problem is that nobody really has the salient statistics.

To be candid, my flip comments aside, there are no peer-reviewed studies that document conclusively whether one is safer owning a handgun or not owning one. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), our national experts on mortality and morbidity, have concluded this numerous times. The data are just too sparse and too hard to analyze (too many variables).

I think it should be the prerogative of the home owner and not anyone else......I won't vouch for one side or the other, but it should be up to the home owner him or herself whether to own a gun for protection.....

I'm against gun ownership by myself, and by my immediate neighbors.

$20 says at least one of your immediate neighbors owns a firearm.

Oh, BTW, I think Derrick Foster might advise caution when "defending yourself in your home" with firearms:

Maybe instead he should advise caution on the advisability of going to illegal gambling setups late at night & shooting at people through closed doors without identifying them.
