Defending yourself in your home

Guns don't kill people...bullets do...duh. :shake:

WRONG!!! bullets don't kill people. blood loss and hemmoraging kills people. i can't understand why a law doesn't exist that outlaws them. the gov must protect us!!!

theres a show called it takes a thief on the discovery channel. airs everyday around 5pm i think. i noted several people say they have insurance to cover the things that are stolen. if you think that and you don't have every single item in your possesion recorded with pictures and descriptions your fooling yourself. it will take you years to figure out what all was taken. watch the show, seriously. its amazing how easy it is to break into a house and how little help neighbors are. nice well to do quiet neighborhoods are actually the best targets. very little if any real security and neighbors aren't security guards. the really funny ones are the people with dogs. even so called aggressive breeds. out of 4 seasons of episodes i think only 2 actually tried to bite the theif. only 1 made any serious attempt to prevent him from breaking in.

The Gov't can't protect us. Our protection is in our own hands.

Noboby should get disrespected and let some dumb ass take there stuff. A beat down is in effect, because the time the cops got to the house he would be long gone and never caught.
Yeah, that's right. If you feel "disrespected," just bust a cap in the motherfucker. That's what they do in the 'hood, and we all want to live gangsta, don't we?

I really hope all the people who want to "defend their turf" with heavy weaponry buy lots of guns, because frankly the herd needs to be thinned out a bit. Gun accidents will help do that in a hurry.

I have to admit I find it laughable that so many people are against guns, especially the ownership of them. Especially when their primary concern is always the "accidental shooting" fear. How about those same folks throw some of this same passion into the war on drugs? Or drunk drivers? I guarantee there are thousands of more deaths related to alcohol than there is to an "accidental" shooting.

Then the next favorite argument is to "prevent violent crime". I know this is obvious, but the idiots that are committing murders and robberies and assaults aren't exactly "legal" owners or carriers of firearms. Every single gun control law I've ever seen does nothing but "punish" legal gun owners. Ohio can ban all firearms...all that will mean is that the cops and the criminals will carry them...the criminals will just get them from Indiana or Kentucky, or wherever. Ugh.

NOTE - this diatribe is not aimed at any individual here...just a rant. There is obviously a difference between the personal choice to not own weapons, and the effort to take weapons away from everyone else.
I'm against gun ownership by myself, and by my immediate neighbors. And by anyone who works in my office building (to the extent they try to bring them onsite). Otherwise, like they say, "Drink up, Shriners!"

And as they said to Charleton Heston regarding his comment that they could pry his weapons from his cold, dead fingers -- "Whatever."

It's fairly simple, there are some who don't want guns and will depend on the police for protection. Good luck. THere are on average 4 or 5 breaks ins per day in the Toledo area.
Myself, I can't bring myself to depend on someone who won't arrive in time to do anything other than to call an ambulance or the dead meat wagon.

Those of you who think "it won't happen to me" are just flirting with danger because it can, no matter who you are , or where you live, or how big the police dept. happens to be.

(My comments regarding handgun ownership and the likelihood of a serious accident.)

Bottom line: if you think you and your family are safer if you own handguns for "protection," I'd like to talk to you about some investment property in the Mojave ...

Of course, you may believe that self-inflicted injuries are less troublesome than ones inflicted by a criminal, and if that is the case, you should indeed own guns; the more the better.

How many of those result in a dead homeowner or dead robber?

There are innumerable contingencies for which people can prepare. Everyone has different priorities in regards to which to worry about. If this is one that concerns you and owning a gun makes you feel safer, great.

I tend to consider it a rather unlikely scenario, so I'm not going to spend too much time worrying about it. I'm far more concerned about things serious threats to my safety. Like rabid St. Bernard's. And 1958 Plymouth Fury's that are possessed by evil spirits. And Illinois Nazis. I hate Illinois Nazi. And tornadoes. The fucking tornadoes are definitely out to get me.

Damn. Sorry......rambling again. That damned tornado watch in Athens County has me all out-of-sorts.

And every handgun that kills a kid because the kid found it and shot him/herself or a playmate, and every spouse shot and killed instead of being beaten up because a gun was handier when their spouse or significant other went temporarily bat shit crazy would disagree with you - and be right.

Those who had no gun and were killed by intruders would disagree with them - and also be right. But until you look at the number of people killed by one scenario versus the other, you can lose the desert property ananogy...I mean, it is true that you might drown in a canal your car flips into, but it is a piss poor statistical reason not to wear seat belts.

I do not have stats on deaths and lives saved both ways, but somebody does, and just like seat belt use in light of a possible drowning, only one answer is a good choice to make. I would imagine that owning a gun in a high crime area is a better choice than a homeowner in a low crime area owning a gun.

BTW, I own guns.
