DE Will Smith (National Champion, Super Bowl Champion, Pro-bowler; R.I.P.)

Terrible news.

Will Smith, former N.O. Saints defensive end, killed and woman wounded in Lower Garden District shooting

Editor's note:
This story has been updated to reflect that the man killed in the Saturday night shooting in the Lower Garden District was Will Smith, former Saints defensive end.

Will Smith, a former defensive end with the New Orleans Saints, was killed and a woman was wounded in a late-night shooting on Saturday (April 9) in the Lower Garden District, New Orleans police said.

The double shooting took place around 11:29 p.m., near the intersection of Sophie Wright and Felicity streets. Smith was fatally shot and the female victim was shot in the leg, police said.

A witness at the scene, Janis Baehr, a tourist in town for the French Quarter Festival, said she was walking near the intersection and heard six to eight gunshots. She said she went to the injured woman's aid, giving her ice chips. The witness said the woman appeared to have two gunshot wounds to her leg. The woman was taken away by ambulance.

Smith was slumped over the steering wheel of a silver SUV. The coroner's office is on the scene investigating.

No more information is available at this time, police said.

One of the greats - on the field and in life.

"At early age Will Smith lost mom to breast cancer. Always gave back like annual Xmas with the Smiths w/wife Racquel"

"Will Smith was a different type of player for the Saints. He was always moving about the city freely showing love. This is wild sad."

Former Buckeyes defensive tackle Tim Anderson prefers to go back to the first Miami snap, when defensive end Will Smith sacked quarterback Ken Dorsey.

"I remember (the Hurricanes) were all looking at each other, like, 'These guys might be a little better than we thought they would be,'" Anderson said.

Really, that was the motivating factor for most Ohio State players entering that game, in which they were about two-touchdown underdogs. The pregame story line was all about No. 1 Miami's speed-laden lineup.

Video of that sack:

"Will Smith was one of the nicest guys I ever talked to off the field. A gentle giant taken far too soon. Thoughts and prayers to his family."
