DE Sam Hubbard (All B1G, National Champion, Cincinnati Bengals)

Jeff Svoboda from BSB made a good point the other day. Last time Hubbard played in a game (state title game against Mentor in December of 2013), he was playing safety. Testament to his hard work and natural abilities that he's now drawing rave reviews at DE. Looking forward to watching him play this year.

Hubbard is a legit 265 and he isn't "top heavy" like a lot of guys who get big quickly from lifting. He's very thick in his legs giving him the good base you need as a college lineman.

Once he hit 265 he wanted to stop adding weight but I'm not sure he has a choice. He's still developing and should be a very big kid in another year or two.
Yep. He can easily put on 10-15 pounds of upper weight without compromising quickness or agility...

I would certainly believe that, he's added a ton of muscle mass. I just meant I don't think by any means he is below 250 and that would be more than big enough for the position.

Also think he is in for another 10-15 lbs as well of good growth.

Agreed. He's got a frame to hold it. Watching him on the LAX field I'd be hard pressed to say that the athleticism will suffer. His weight thus far has been really lean good weight. I'm looking forward to seeing him on the field again soon.

Redshirt Year Behind Him, Now It's Time for Sam Hubbard to 'Just Go Play'

15-08-10-FB-1138.jpg

Sam Hubbard is a redshirt freshman defensive end who stands 6-foot-5 and weighs in around 260 pounds.

That is who he is now, but it's a far cry from what he used to be.

Hubbard came to Ohio State as a 5-star linebacker who played safety and lacrosse at Cincinnati Moeller, and played both very well. Considering his 6-5 frame, nobody was surprised when he quickly outgrew the linebacker position.

Some projected him at tight end in college, so it was again no surprise when he ended up there for a spell last year. Eventually, however, he settled in at defensive end, and despite being absolutely new to it, he picked it up extremely well.

In Hubbard, defensive line coach Larry Johnson was given a brick of clay to mold, and it may have been Hubbard's lack of experience at the position that the veteran coach liked most.

"The thing about Sam is that he’s such a good athlete," he said. "He makes for a really unique guy. He has no bad habits, and I like them like that. Guys who are raw who have no bad habits. Everything he gets his first time, and I think that’s what really makes him intriguing. It really is. He’s such a bright player. When a guy is very bright, really studies the game, and understands the game and wants to be great, it gives you a chance as a coach really to develop him. So I like where we are with Sam and his development."

IN PLACE OF A SUSPENDED JOEY BOSA, OHIO STATE'S SAM HUBBARD COMES INTO HIS OWN AGAINST VIRGINIA TECH

When Sam Hubbard stepped into the Ohio State postgame interview room late in the 11 p.m. hour Monday at Lane Stadium, it was hard to determine if he or Cardale Jones — who had exited the room a few minutes before — was wearing a bigger smile.

Jones, of course, had quarterbacked the Buckeyes through three-plus quarters against Virginia Tech mere hours before, finally getting word he'd won the starting job over J.T. Barrett. He played well in front of a national television audience to help Ohio State avenge it's lone loss from 2014, 42-24, before yielding to Barrett — who kept the offense humming right along — and enjoying himself on the sideline.

The Buckeye quarterbacks had a microscope on them all offseason and into training camp. That focus continued remained on them as the Lane Stadium clock ticked away prior to kickoff Labor Day Night.

Only it was Hubbard, the converted All-State safety turned defensive end, who also heard his name called throughout the game against the Hokies.

"Early indications are that he played very well," Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer said of Hubbard Tuesday afternoon on the Big Ten teleconference.
