DE/LB Thaddeus Gibson (official thread)

Yup. The good and bad of playing out of your skull. Thad dominated yesterday, and showed why he is about to make tons of money. I just hope Cam decides to stay....don't want to lose both, coupled with Worthington graduating.

I don't know what was said to Thad during halftime, but he was a monster in the 2nd half. I think he was in on more plays in the 2nd half yesterday than he was in the first 3.5 games combined. He's unstoppable when he plays like that. Here's hoping he can bring that attitude every game.

Agreed, he wasn't coming off of the ball or using his hands in the first half. Second half, he flat out dominated their tackles even while being tackled by them (see play where Thad forced fumble on Juice).

Thad definitely deserves defensive POW for the Buckeyes. Great, great day for him. Just too bad for him this performance came on the same day as the otherworldly performance by DE Adrian Clayborn of the Iowa Hawkeyes, who should get that award for the conference. We'll have to keep some attention on that young man when we play the Hawks.

They may not need to. Those guys made a decision together and wanted a chance at a Title. With the way the schedule shapes up next year, it could be tailor made for a title run... unlike 08.

Mel's Personnel Points: Tiger safety net
An LSU safety, a Stanford RB, a Alabama CB, an Oregon TE and others on the rise

Another Buckeye defender rising

Used as a hybrid DE-OLB, Ohio State junior Thaddeus Gibson was the most dominant defensive player on the field in the Buckeyes' 30-0 victory over Illinois. Try as they might, the Fighting Illini had no answer for him off the edge. He showed good anticipation without taking himself out of plays by recklessly charging hard up the field. From there, his exceptional closing speed took over as he made his presence felt in both the running and passing game. The experience he is gaining now by occasionally working in reverse will no doubt pay dividends down the road. Currently lacking ideal size (6-2, 244) to hold the point as a defensive end at the pro level, his Sundays will be spent primarily at outside linebacker.

Of course, you wonder if some personnel folks will have fresh in their minds the early trials of Vernon Gholston, who has struggled on Sundays after his exceptional physical talents pushed him into the top 10 of the 2008 draft.

I am a total homer but there is only one maybe two players that I would even consider before Gibson...

1. Navorro Bowman, Penn State
2. Rennie Curran, Georgia
3. Bruce Carter, North Carolina
4. Michael Morgan, USC
5. Thaddeus Gibson, Ohio State

Sports.Ohio State: Only thing on Gibson's mind is the Big Ten
Published: Wednesday, October 7, 2009

Thaddeus Gibson loves the three Big Ten championship rings he owns.

He just wants more.

Maybe that's why the redshirt junior defensive end from Ohio State is so bent on adding to his collection this year and next.

A career in the NFL likely awaits the Euclid product. While rumors swirl about his possible departure after this season, the blinders Gibson is wearing keep him tunnel-visioned on another ring.

"My favorite ring is the one from last year," Gibson said. "I love it to death and wear it more than any of the others. But to get another one this year? That would mean a lot. It would mean everything.

"That would be the big one."

Because it would be the one in which he was most instrumental.

Heading into Saturday's game against visiting Wisconsin, Gibson has 12 tackles, five other tackles for loss and a handful of quarterback hurries. The 6-foot-3, 240-pounder might be a little undersized by defensive end standards, but he is making his presence felt.

"I had always waited for the opportunity to be a go-to player here, like everybody else on this team," Gibson said. "We lost a lot of stars on this team, like James Laurinaitis, Marcus Freeman and Malcolm Jenkins, going into this year. I think everybody on the defense wanted to be a leader."
