DC Jim Knowles (Official Thread)

This guy is going to go down in the Jim Bollman wing of the OSU assistant coaches hall of shame.

(and yes, at one point the majority of OSU fans didn't want to hear anyone speak ill of Bollman either)
I think he's going to prove you wrong but that's just my opinion. Bollman proved himself over and over again and then again at other schools.

I actually think Knowles will prove a lot of people wrong, at least with a good defense this year. His recruiting prowess is yet to be determined, but I think his overall scheme will work once adapted. And he is very blunt on abandoning things that didn't work with the personnel...to me that is the most encouraging thing about him, we have had DC's pick a hill to die on repeatedly that just would not make adjustments. Knowles does not strike me as that guy whatsoever.

All that being said, Knowles does need to have a pretty dominant defense this year with the guys he has. JT, Sawyer, Kenyatta, Hall, Tyleik, Malone, Eich, Chambers, Hicks, Powers, Burke, Hancock, Davison, Styles, Ransom, Proctor, etc...if we are not dominant with this group, then I am watching this one closely.

Comparing Knowles to Bollman is wild to me.

I can't think of a position group that underachieved more during the Tressel era than Bollman and the Oline. And, apart from maybe the 2005 group, they never seemingly progressed year to year. You didn't get any groups where their sum was greater than their parts.

I didn't compare him to Bollman. I said he's going into the Bollman wing of the assistant coach hall of shame.

Meaning Bollman was so bad they named the wing of the building after him but you put all the bad ones in there.

My original “Lovely” comment was more directed at the old curmudgeon DL coach that doesn’t seem aligned with Knowle’s desired defense, by the way.

Either way the whole staff needs to produce, at every level and as a whole.

I think we’ll be fine this year. The talent is hugely upgraded and year 2 in a system means a lot. And “Fine” should be good enough if the offense leads as its supposed to in today’s game.

I find it hilarious how many people still find ways to shit on Knowles even though he very noticeably improved the defense. He inherited severely undercoached DBs who were constantly out of position and blowing coverages. Half of the plays people crap on him about were the right coverages, just executed horridly.
I just like how he wasted a year of Jack Sawyer's development

How would you know if it's a waste or not? How are we to know if there were any plans to play Sawyer anywhere else?
You make a good point about we don't know what plans there were.

I rather have Sawyer ride the pine on Saturdays if that meant every single rep was at the position he is going to play under LJ and around those dudes. Not some gimmick position from the big 12.

This is Ohio State, you let the D Line work and you rotate. Clearly, the rotation went away last season w Knowles, too.

So which is it...

1. You develop by playing on Saturdays so it doesn't matter he was out of position because he played

Or

2. You develop every day throughout the week from all the things we don't see on TV Saturday afternoon and our program is developing you for when it's your turn to be next man up?

I think it's a blend of both, but the work gets done in practice boys.

That's the point of wasting a year of his eligibility. He came to play for LJ not be a hybrid big 12 fuckboy

that situation seems a lot more like LJ was going to use him sparingly and Knowles wanted him on the field but who knows.
Definitely could be - every year LJ has been here I feel like we rotated the front and back 7 until last year which is why I blame the new guy in charge of the defense.

But you all are right, no clue what's happening behind the scenes .... Which is my whole issue with a head coach who is learning on the job and can't manage the defense as the CEO of the program but I digress and will stop beating the dead horse.

Hope I'm wrong, truly.

I think Knowles will have a great year for the record. I could be totally wrong but I am expecting to see a much different defense this year based on everything he has been saying compared to what he was saying last year at the same time. Knowles himself would tell you he needs to make changes.
