DC Jim Knowles (Official Thread)

Against ND, Knowles Defense:
  • Allowed O plays of 30+ yards
  • ND was 50% on 3rd & 0% on 4th down
  • 14 points allowed on 35 minutes of possession time
  • Held Sam Hartman to less than 200 yards passing and 2 TDs for the first time since 2020
Without him, we lose this game by double digits.

Can’t ask for any more than holding a a serious opponent to 14. The lack of big explosive plays was huge. The interior DL is tough as hell.

Those 14 coming on long time consuming drives that are up most of the second half is concerning. What if ND had a better game plan and ran that way in the first half? What if they gave it to their bowling ball RB instead of the QB twice on 4th down?

Hopefully this ND offensive line is the best we see all year because Harbaugh won’t make the mistakes Freeman made.

I think it’s at least noteworthy that Sawyer told Birm post take that this was the best offensive line he has ever encountered and the most physical game he has ever played.

I refuse to allow myself to bitch about this game (not saying you are) because this is the exact kind of game we lose. I think coming out of this on top is psychologically huge for this staff and players.

ND’s line has a top 10 pick on it and probably two others that at least look draftable. Our DL got decked in the face hard; they wiped the blood off their mouth and punched back immediately. I couldn’t be more proud of them for that.

Agreed. I don’t think anyone else on the schedule can have an OL significantly better than ND if at all.

Also agree on psychological bit. Confidence is a funny thing. Teams can get it (no matter if some dumb luck was involved or not) and it just grows. I’d rather have it than not.

If LJ Sr can manage to get his shit together and the front four can consistently pressure the QB, that goes from a really solid game to pure domination.

I get that the ND oline is really good, but the dline hasn’t gotten pressure all season.

Genuine question for whomever: do we have reason to believe that a defensive line is just going to start magically generating pressure at some random point this season? I feel like if they coupd or has the ability we would have seen it by now.

I just posted this in his thread.

a lack of consistent QB pressure from the group in every game so far this season (I suspect, similar to Studrawa being bad at coaching RPO blocking schemes, LJ Sr simply is not good at coaching the players to maintain their gap assignments while getting after the quarterback, and when he is told that they need to be gap sound, he responds similarly to the rotation critique and completely over compensates rather than finding an appropriate balance)
Do I think that LJ Sr is going to get better at coaching balancing gap assignments with rushing the passer? No, not really. But I do think it’s possible someone could intervene and flip a switch that results in more pressure. The thing is, I don’t think anyone is in a position to intervene in LJ Sr.’s room.

When did Larry Johnson forget how to coach?

Or could it just be that our DE’s aren’t good pass rushers?

he’s a septuagenarian, everything fades if given enough time

I’d say the mix of less talent (which is also his fault) and forgetting how to coach hit a tipping point sometime between Chase Young leaving and now

Also, similarly to the writing being on the wall for Studrawa when Day brought in RPO concepts that he openly complained about in interviews, I think the introduction of Knowles really accelerated the deterioration of LJ Sr.’s effectiveness… because he doesn’t know how to balance an effective pass rush with gap responsibilities, and he openly dislikes the Jack position, probably because it complicates gap responsibilities for the rest of the down linemen
