DC/LB Coach Jim Knowles (Official Thread)

Yes, every single time. But looking back at last season, a defense getting stops even just 50% of the time likely results in sitting at undefeated going into the playoffs as the number one seed.

That may be one of the most embarassing/bummed out parts of the season. The fact that the defense didn't even need to be great to get us in the CFP is what irks me so much. A good, to average defense gets OSU a win in The Game, another B1G title and a CFP berth. But the problem also, if we have that good defense, there wouldn't have been wholesale defensive changes like we needed...

Well Dad actually said this changes things and, essentially, not in a good way.

As far as thinking Coombs was a good thing for his DB son to make it to the NFL as fast as possible, I think you are starting to get into the individual over the team stuff. If my kid was an elite DB and Coombs stays at OSU but the defense continues to struggle, I can still see a clear path to the NFL for my kid, I can still see NIL money and I can still see big time exposure from being at an elite school (playoffs, big games etc). All in all, the defense as a whole being very poor isn't that hard to recruit around.."We'd be better with more guys like you and that's why you're my #1 guy..." type stuff.
I'm concerned by one comment made by the dad. Knowles has been on the job for 12 days and AJ hasn't heard from him.

It's possible OSU's priorities have changed. If they haven't, it's a bad sign that Knowles didn't call him the very first day. I looked at Knowles previous recruiting success on 247sports. He is not listed in the top 100 recruiters for 21. I think his ranking may be 528 and 99th in the Big Ten. His top 5 recruits of all time are all 3*s and 4/5 were at Duke.

I know when Ryan Day was named HC, he spent the day on the phone with recruits. When Urban was named HC, he called recruits before he even gave his introductory press conference.

I've noticed great recruiters prioritize recruiting, all of the time.

Sorry folks not getting my panties in a bunch about 1 recruit from Alabama that was upset he didn't call right away. He seemed to have connection/recruited by Coombs, but with him making a decision soon and Coombs gone, I'd wager there's a 80%+ chance he wasn't coming here. Have we heard from any other recruits on the D side of the ball in '23 or their parents complain about lack of contact yet?

Knowles was brought in to fix the defense ... not be a stud ace recruiter... I'm fine with that... that being said we do have too many dead weight recruiters still hanging on.

It's not about one recruit. It's one of several signs that Knowles just doesn't work at recruiting.
