DC/LB Coach Jim Knowles (Official Thread)

There have been numerous updates from recruits Frye has contacted.
In fact I believe he is going to see Luke Montgomery this weekend.

My guess is Knowles as the DC isn’t expected to be a rain maker as a recruiter.
But contact should have been made, something along the lines of building a relationship once our staff fills out.
This isn’t Cornell or Duke.

I’m in the “you don’t make contact until position coaches are settled” camp because the first question is going to be “is my position coach who has been recruiting me going to be there still?”

I don’t know, maybe, yes, and no are all cursed responses to the question.

"This is Ryan Day, I'm working hard to find you the best coach in America to help you get to the NFL. In the meantime, I just wanted you to know that you're still our #1 guy etc etc etc"

It isn't that hard. The fact it wasn't done that way keeps me in the line of thinking that they knew/know this kid isn't coming here.

Nothing else really makes sense. The Ohio State staff didn't just forget how to recruit prime time guys. If Knowles isn't expected to be an ace recruiter then they more than likely already have a plan to cover that up.

Styles is enrolling in June and still hooping I think.

Saw this on bucknuts.
Haven’t watched it all need to get a heavy lift in.

“playing that first down marker like it’s a goal line and selling that to the players…”

EDIT: Definitely doesn’t come across like a bend-don’t-break kinda guy…

Which is perfect. Bend but don’t break means the ball isn’t with the offense.

Get a quick stop or give up a touchdown quickly. Either way, get the ball back to the offense as quickly as possible.

There are lots of other possibilities that make sense. Like maybe, just maybe the kid and family are really into the “love” being showered on them and the attention. Maybe their thoughts on the actual program and opportunities at tOSU hasn’t changed at all. Perhaps deep down they know the defense needed a change and this is all a positive.

I know this, anyone who saw the production by the defense this year, which included Coombs, and thought “THIS is what we want for our son” and changing that actually hurts tOSU is out of their minds. I know “relationships” are key in recruiting and I realize the track record with Coombs and the players he’s coached but that’s been several years now in the past. The current results are very VERY underwhelming.

I have zero concerns for anything that has happened with the staff turn over and have no reason to question what Day and Pantoni are doing with recruiting. One families reaction to those changes won’t even move the needle to me. What needed to happen was a massive shake up. If your results on the field suck then I don’t think anyone really cares about relationships, blah blah blah.

Well Dad actually said this changes things and, essentially, not in a good way.

As far as thinking Coombs was a good thing for his DB son to make it to the NFL as fast as possible, I think you are starting to get into the individual over the team stuff. If my kid was an elite DB and Coombs stays at OSU but the defense continues to struggle, I can still see a clear path to the NFL for my kid, I can still see NIL money and I can still see big time exposure from being at an elite school (playoffs, big games etc). All in all, the defense as a whole being very poor isn't that hard to recruit around.."We'd be better with more guys like you and that's why you're my #1 guy..." type stuff.
