DC/LB Coach Jim Knowles (Official Thread)

"This is Ryan Day, I'm working hard to find you the best coach in America to help you get to the NFL. In the meantime, I just wanted you to know that you're still our #1 guy etc etc etc"

It isn't that hard. The fact it wasn't done that way keeps me in the line of thinking that they knew/know this kid isn't coming here.

Nothing else really makes sense. The Ohio State staff didn't just forget how to recruit prime time guys. If Knowles isn't expected to be an ace recruiter then they more than likely already have a plan to cover that up.

May be it is harder than you think. May be Day knew that they would ask about Coombs, and Day wasn’t ready to let the world know about letting Coombs go just yet as Day was still trying to secure a replacement.

And let’s face it. What professional doesn’t show up for a new job and either:
a) Ask for a list of things that their new boss needs them to address immediately, or
b) Get handed a list of things that the new boss needs addressed immediately.

There’s no way this is on Knowles shoulders alone. We may be able to speculate reasons for why Knowles didn’t reach out, but I’m 100% certain oversight or lack of motivation are not explanations.

I'm concerned by one comment made by the dad. Knowles has been on the job for 12 days and AJ hasn't heard from him.

It's possible OSU's priorities have changed. If they haven't, it's a bad sign that Knowles didn't call him the very first day. I looked at Knowles previous recruiting success on 247sports. He is not listed in the top 100 recruiters for 21. I think his ranking may be 528 and 99th in the Big Ten. His top 5 recruits of all time are all 3*s and 4/5 were at Duke.

I know when Ryan Day was named HC, he spent the day on the phone with recruits. When Urban was named HC, he called recruits before he even gave his introductory press conference.

I've noticed great recruiters prioritize recruiting, all of the time.

Safe to believe that Knowles and the rest of Oklahoma State staff were recruiting before Knowles was hired by Ohio State? Maybe they even were recruiting some/many of the same players, perhaps even players in Alabama? Maybe Knowles or somebody on the Oklahoma State staff has a history with some player’s family, coaches, etc. and had decided that player was not a good fit for their system? Also safe to assume that Ohio State’s recruiting staff provided Knowles with detailed information about every defensive player recruiting targets and that Knowles provided them with his thoughts on each of those targets?

There’s a whole lot that goes into anyone’s time management, particularly in the first few weeks of starting a new job. IF Knowles decided not to contact somebody, I think we ought to believe it was for good reason.

At least we've replaced the Elias ricks soapbox seamlessly, except this time with someone with absolutely no one saying he was possible to come here before the bowls.
I'm of the impression that most of the offensive staff are good recruiters. Obviously Hartline is elite.

On defense:
Johnson is a damn good recruiter
Edit: Walton? (not Salem)
Knowles?
Eliano?

Thanks for catching that.
Who are the assistants that we had wisdom on?

Hartline? No.
Hafley? Next to nothing
Grinch? Not much, and he Costanza'd the whole year (or decade).
Taver Johnson? We thought so, but he was worse than Grinch.
Ed? Yes, and we were wrong.
Stud? Yes and we were wrong again.

Heck Coombs was an unmatched monster in recruiting and at the exact same school. This time around, he proved to be good not great in his first year (which was a massive upgrade over the paycheck stealers before him). He has not finished strong this year.

Knowles? Yes as a coordinator. No transferrable data as a recruiter.

Lj sr? Yes. But he's been streets ahead of his psu self.

C'mon Jwins. If we don't have something to bitch and complain about all off season, what are we supposed to argue about? BBQ and the color of Buckeye leaves? ( green)

Agreed. I think there is a possibility OSU's priorities have changed. I think I mentioned that before.

My question is if they remain unchanged.

Once we have a better idea of the staff's targets, we'll get a better feel for the effort level and ability to recruit.

If we truly want the Silver Bullets to return, the Buckeyes are going to have to recruit at a high level going forward.
