DC Jim Knowles (Official Thread)

Aren’t we far enough along with NIL to stop using “bag man” comments and acting like any kid or family looking for the best deal is some sort of selfish trouble that OSU is trying to avoid?

Competing in NIL is going to be part of it, to some degree or another, with any elite recruit going forward.

I’d suggest we learn to deal with it. Ewers didn’t stop in Columbus first because of the weather or snappy uniforms.

Mainly based on his father going to social media to complain about being disrespected in the middle of a complete defensive coaching revamp. That seems like the type of family that is looking for handouts. But then again, if he actually considering following Coombs to UC (and not just pretending so as a middle finger to OSU) that would suggest otherwise.

What if the kid really took to Coombs? Say what you will about his coaching results the last two years, there's no denying the guy has great recruiting chops and a rep for putting DBs into the NFL.

Maybe the kid goes to UC with Coombs, gets the chance to start and star. Maybe after a year or two, he wants to show what he can do against better comp and in a bigger TV market. Maybe because Day didn't burn bridges to the kid and to Coombs, and maybe because Coombs didn't burn bridges leaving OSU, there's a way for the kid to find his way back to Columbus.

In the meantime, I wish both well.

I’ve always hated that “bag man” comments. My wife was a cheerleader at the University of Louisville and she would tell me about the stuff that Terrence Williams and Amobi Okoye would have (brand new cars, Rolex’s, designer clothes and sunglasses, etc…) and she was like “how tf do they afford this stuff?” And all I could think about was, jeez, I wonder what is going on at Ohio State, LSU, and Florida?? Because this was in 07/08.

Point being, if Louisville was doing that for mostly 3 stars and a few 4 stars, what did it take to get the 5 stars? I know not every athlete is after Rolex’s and new cars, but you present that stuff to a 17 year old and you have their attention quick.

If he took to Coombs, that's totally understandable and I'd never fault a kid or a family with choosing whoever they feel most comfortable with.

What I don't care for is a dad coming out in the middle of a total staffing overhaul and complaining that his ass isn't being kissed enough.

So much this.

Yup. Like I and others have mentioned, grades, character and family / parents are all huge considerations when recruiting at any level. Ultimately, if the parents are giving signals that they are going to require a level of hand-holding that takes away from what I have to do on the field as a coach, their hand-holding (unproductive time) has to be factored into the overall benefits that a player can bring to the team. When the sum of the two becomes negative, you move on. Either formally or by a strong show of being unwilling to play the game.

Gotta be honest, I have a LOT of empathy for these coaches. Dealing with parents is a drag and it’s pretty much taken any love for sharing my game with kids. I’ve hung up my whistle as far as youth coaching goes and coaching college this spring as what may be my potential swan-song. Thankfully the college game is, for the most part, the terminal level of lacrosse play… the kids on the team either are getting money to play or walk on and it’s clear that the coaches objectives are to win frick’n games with the roster they have. That’s the end of it. There’s no worry about NIL or showcasing for the next level.

Ah, parents...

In track, you think you have it covered because you've got times on everyone. But then I had a kid and a parent on the phone complaining because I put my second best hurdler into the District meet ahead of their son. Never mind that the kid I picked had consistently better times all season. "You're letting a junior run ahead of our son who's a senior."

Our small local HS here about 7 years ago had a 6 10 German foreign exchange student. The coach would only play him 6 min a game..even though he outworked everyone in practice and the weight Room.Parents went to school board and they set the 6 minute limit. Smh.BTW the young man stayed silent and his host family kept silent,

That's some bullshit. I mean I get play everyone mentality if you suck and are the worst team in the league with your best might as well get the other kids some playing time from time to time. But also effort and talent should be rewarded. Not who's parent is a school booster or on the school board etc...

I loved coaching. It gave you another POV to your students. The vast number of kids worked hard and their parents were supportive, but there was always someone whose parents made you hope they would transfer their kid to another school.

Unfortunately it's not always the kids. We sucked for years in football in SE Ohio hired a good coach who coached baseball and football. Made an immediate turn around and all the kids loved him. Then some teachers got mad cause he wasn't a teacher at the but instead was ateacher at a small private Christian school just down the road. So some teachers made a grab for is job and rammed it through the school board. Of course we went back to sucking and those coaches played favorites of who's dad was important etc etc..

The whole reason I didn't get into coaching. I was asked to be on a staff but the school mandated you had to be a teacher in the district so I went into other fields. I definitely would have done it otherwise.

That's just chicken shit admin. I'm an AD, I teach and I've coached football for 20 years. Someone in your school system has no balls.

I don't doubt it. It happened when I was sophomore in highschool so I have no idea about the maneuverings in the school board. But given what happened afterwards I don't doubt their were shady deals done for support for the jealous coaches to get the job. Your son is a freshman right? I'll make sure he makes the varsity team and plays next year if you vote for me bullshit.
