DC/LB Coach Jim Knowles (Official Thread)

So our empire is doomed to be split among 10s if not 100s of offspring when we die?

I was making a metaphor where Ohio State is dominating the region. I guess I could continue the metaphor and say that no one will be safe from our cavalry archers, and only a wall 1 million miles long will save them from our destruction.
But.... that seemed silly.

At his introductory press conference at the start of February, Knowles was still calling the free safety position the “bandit." By the start of spring practice on Tuesday, the former Oklahoma State defensive coordinator was referring to the free safety spot as “the adjuster,” while bandit is now the name for the boundary safety position.

“That’s different than it was at Oklahoma State,” Knowles said after Tuesday’s practice. “Sometimes when you move, you look at what you say and say, ‘I could really say this better.’ So instead of calling the bandit like we did at Oklahoma State, he was the free safety. Well, the bandit is the boundary safety, it makes sense, ‘B.’ And then make the middle safety, we call him the adjuster, because he is the guy that has to really adjust to the formation. So there’s things you get to do when you take a new job to make things better for the players and understandable.”

What hasn’t changed is the importance of the safety in Knowles’ scheme, even if his most direct influence position-wise is with the linebacker unit. Knowles spoke extensively on Tuesday about four safeties in particular that could be vital to a successful defensive turnaround for the Buckeyes in 2022, offering insights into what he’s seen from Kourt Williams, Ronnie Hickman, Tanner McCalister and Josh Proctor so far this offseason.

Just sayin':

What we were doing on defense the last few years just wasn't working and I don't think it was due to lack of talent. Glad to see some defensive scheme changes. I'm optimistic that the 2022 defense will be a definite improvement.

Jim Knowles on rugby-style tackling: 'I'm into it, for sure'

"So, everything we do is really based off of those principles keeping your head out of it. And it all turns into rugby tackle. It really does. There's not, you know, we we are not harping on those major contact collisions. In practice even when we get pads on, we're not. Footballs is a physical game and it's going to happen, but we're really teaching angles; keep your head out of it. Use that rugby approach."

In the early stages of spring camp, Jim Knowles has already made quite an impression on the Buckeye players, coaches, media, and fans. Perhaps his most head-turning comment for Ohio State devotees this week was when he declared the free safety in his defense would now be referred to as "the adjustor," while the boundary safety that was previously called “bullet” is now called “bandit.”

Good lord all the names he threw out there who were doing well. Just how awful was the last group of turds at teaching these guys? Ugh

BTW, the way coach tells the story of who we are and what we do is outstanding. He gets it more than most coaches I've ever heard. You just don't put the best 40time or vertical jump on the field, there are guys who just play the game ala Chris Spielman. The "feel" of the game just fits some guys and they aren't always the fastest or the strongest just the best. Of course when you get all of that in a player you get a monster of a defense. WANT

I think we had too many position coaches, and no one that could run an entire defense. And that was the issue. Too many times, it seemed like Coombs was so excited by all those high rated players from HS, and thought just putting them on the field with little strategy, they would just out talent everyone. Until they ran into teams with equal talent, then we became screwed, because there was little gameplan or changes in scheme. Knowles seems like a guy ready for plan A to Z with every team we face. And the amount of assistants he brought on shows that he is ready for this defensive overhaul

It's clear out strategy for the last few years under Meyer and the first few under Day were we are going to be better than you and we don't care you know what we are running. We're going to have so much talent we beat you anyways. While Knowles loves the talent he wants to out scheme you as well. Not just dare you to beat his talent
