In addition to recording 14 tackles, Duke safety Jeremy Cash nabbed the first interception of his collegiate career against Troy.

Jeremy Cash's most vivid memory on the field as an Ohio State football player came in the Buckeyes' 2011 matchup with Michigan. Wolverine wideout Jeremy Gallon fielded a first-quarter kickoff and returned it almost to midfield before Cash made the stop.

It would be his last tackle in an Ohio State uniform.

“That was Michigan. We played in the Big House," Cash said. "Running down on kickoff, that was pretty intense. That’s our rivalry school so that was a big game. I was happy to be out there.”

Despite playing in five games a true freshman for the Buckeyes, Cash's career in Columbus came to a quick end after the 2011 season.

The NCAA found that Ohio State players had been selling autographs, jerseys and rings for cash and tattoos, and the Buckeyes immediately felt the wrath of college football's governing body. Ohio State received a bowl ban for 2012, a reduction in the number of scholarships it could give and one year of probation. In the wake of the scandal, head coach Jim Tressel resigned under pressure from the university's administration.

With the state of the Buckeyes' program in jeopardy, Cash began to think about other options for his collegiate career.

"I had a revelation one day and put all my thoughts on paper and tried to think about what I really wanted out of life," Cash said. "I figured, based on my future, Duke would be a better fit for me.”

A four-star recruit in 2010, Cash picked Ohio State because he wanted to play for Coach Jim Tressel. Cash got to Ohio State in 2011 but never got to play for Tressel, who was fired four months before the season started. Cash played in five games his freshman season under interim coach Luke Fickell.

When Ohio State hired Urban Meyer, a former Florida coach, as Tressel’s full-time replacement, Cash knew his career there was over — Meyer’s Gators were the only Division I program in Florida that did not offer Cash a scholarship. His high school coach, and Tressel, pointed Cash toward Duke.

As Cutcliffe described it, “he didn’t know me from Adam.” Cash, who had to redshirt last season under NCAA rules, and the coach have grown closer and are now inextricably connected by Duke’s turnaround.

“ I think Jeremy has gotten better on and off the field,” Cutcliffe said. “I think Jeremy has grown as a young man and a football player.”

When Cash decided to transfer to Duke, he understood the skepticism about his choice, going from a traditional power to a traditional project.

“ Coming here, most people thought: “He can’t play,’” Cash said. “I just let my play silence all the doubters.”

An All-ACC sophomore season already has proved most of his doubters wrong. There’s nothing Cash wants more than to defy the odds one more time with the ACC title as the reward.

Jeremy Cash is Duke's enforcer
By JOE GIGLIO
The News & Observer (Raleigh, N.C.)December 5, 2013

DURHAM, N.C. — DURHAM, N.C. _ Duke will beat No.1 Florida State in the ACC title game.

Jeremy Cash believes this, he truly does. To tell him otherwise is a waste of oxygen.

The All-ACC safety, who is cut straight from the south Florida "We invented swagger" mold, only knows one way to think.

"You have to be confident," Cash said. "Not arrogant or cocky, but just have confidence in your ability and your teammates and your coach. I have that."

Cash flashes a big smile when he says this. You have to be confident in your ability to get where Cash was, an Ohio State transfer, to where Duke is.

"Cash brings a mentality that's rare," Duke linebacker Kelby Brown said. "He's a guy that's never going to back down from a challenge, it doesn't matter who it is."

Yeah and Jeremy is an outstanding person as well. I was really sad to see him leave but I understood his reasons. But now this really comes back to bite us in the butt...I know the defense had multiple issues but I'm not so sure we weren't one good safety away from beating Sparty and playing in the title.

Duke safety Jeremy Cash to return

Duke safety Jeremy Cash announced Thursday he will return to school for his senior season.

Cash had 111 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, two interceptions and forced four fumbles this past season, leading to second-team All-America honors from the Walter Camp Foundation and Football Writers Association of America. He also was a second-team All-ACC selection.

He was the only defensive back in the nation to record 100-plus tackles, 10.0-plus tackles for loss and 5.0-plus sacks. Mel Kiper Jr. did not have Cash listed among his top safeties for the 2015 draft.

The news is big for a Duke defense that loses five starters, including leading tackler David Helton. But the entire starting secondary returns, with Cash leading the way. Plus, Duke also expects linebacker Kelby Brown back from a torn ACL, potentially giving Duke two of the best defenders in the ACC.
