Darnay Holmes (CB New York Giants)

HOLMES HAS PLENTY OF TIME
Video interview. FWIW, he mentions Ohio State first when asked which schools are standing out...
Fortuitous? This was from October, 2014. That's quite a while ago and we have seen several trips on his own dime to CBus since that time. Why are the recent CBs to the good guys seen as such a surprise? I mean I get the whole Bruin connection thing but judging a kid by his actions and comments this shouldn't be a very big surprise. As I mentioned in another thread, it shouldn't be. For me, it just seemed to good to be true for there to be so much great talent for one class in the secondary. But hey, I'm not complaining.

I've told you when you shouldn't get your hopes up (Trey Smith, Rashard Lawrence, Antwuan Jackson, Porter Gustin, etc.). This is not one of those times...you can start getting your hopes up.
I'm getting my hopes up, but I just have to imagine that there is some shakeup in the secondary portion of the class. I know they very well could lose 3 guys to early departure for the draft, including 2 of them being corners, but a DB class consisting of 5 corners is crazy. Don't get me wrong, I'd love it, but I could absolutely see Riep look at a school like MSU that he was seriously considering.

I don't like saying it and I am a fan of Riep's but if Ohio State loses Riep to get Holmes, I could live with that.

Keep in mind, this staff likes to move Corners to Safety. I could see at least one, possibly two moving to Safety

2017

CB1 Ward
CB2 _____
NB ______

Returning: Davis, Norwood, Burns
Incoming: Wade, Williamson, Holmes/Sheffield*

S Webb
S ______ (Hooker)

Returning: Smith, Fuller, EGW, Wint ... (Hooker)
Incoming: Okudah, Riep

ATH/LB Pryor, White

* - They're unlikely to land both. They may not lead for either.

My best guess?

CB1 Ward, Davis
CB2 Arnette, Sheffield/Holmes
NB Fuller, Wade
S Webb, EGW
S Smith, Okudah

Redshirt or mostly ST: Riep, Williamson

Webb, Smith are seniors in 2017. Ward could go, and if Sheffield starts and stars, he could bolt too. So there could be another 2-4 spots open in 2018.

Riep has already been openly discussed there. Also, in today's game, your safeties better be able to cover as well as a third corner or you'll get smoked (compare 2013 sparty with 2014 with 2015).

He's in my first list at ATH. I don't think White can be a DB here at all. Pryor is a maybe though I think the incoming talent may push him to LB. Now if they whiff on Holmes and Sheffield, and Okudah is the only 2017 DB that stays at safety, then there's a lot more opportunity for Pryor.

@jwinslow - seems like White will slot in at LB....are you thinking the same for Pryor? I noticed you didn't list him on there or at ATH....I was still holding out hope we could slot him at SS
He's listed as a LB/ATH. I personally see him at S. Like a Sean Taylor/Taylor Mays type of S. Pryor has showed some very good cover skills throughout his last season at IMG

He has that kind of talent but I don't think most of those guys could play safety in today's game. Taylor Mays definitely could not (nor could Mike Doss). Taylor would probably be the exception

No chance, Riep is in this class no matter what. As much as I like our 5 star, highly rated DB's, Riep could be the best of the bunch. And as jwins pointed out, we needed to take a high number of DB's in this class, so I think we will load up here.

Agreed, with the spread offense, and offenses in general passing a lot more, Mays wouldn't have much chance at S. Taylor is definitely an outlier, but so is Kerry Rhodes and Kam Chancellor who Pryor reminds of them as well. I see Pryor fitting in well in this secondary as well, but may need a year or 2 seasoning
