Coronavirus (COVID-19) is too exciting for adults to discuss (CLOSED)

I just saw Senator Bill Cassidy (representing Louisiana, born in Illinois), who's a medical doctor, interviewed on TV. He said that he reads the latest medical journals every night. He said that conservative estimates have about 500,000 US residents dying from COVID-19.

I don't think he's an idiot. But it's difficult for me to understand why 500,000 is a low-end estimate for deaths in the US, when China has at this point checked the spread of the virus in that country and they have a little over 3,000 deaths. And they have about 4.5 times the population of the US.

Edit- Jake said about the same thing last night.

Wife went to Kroger this morning and they were fully stocked on everything other than TP. Came home with 3 gallons of milk and a couple extra cases of water. Our tap water is awful. I'll start collecting rain water for the apocalypse before I'll drink from our tap.

I went yesterday. Bread (why? But i guess we had this talk) was pretty much out and TP. Ground beef too. If you wanted fresh chicken it was basically either a whole bird or chicken tenders or wings. Other than that it was mostly normal... If you didn't know better and it was late on Saturday or Sunday you might think they were slow restocking.

Has any been restocked. I haven't seen any fresh supplies since the initial panic buying on Thursday. Supply chains aren't that inefficient, which tells me that it and other items are being held back to be rationed in the near future. Which is fine by me. We've seen how efficient the hallowed market was in allocating scarce resources in a time of crisis.

In fairness, that dude looks like he needs that much toilet paper.

Hit Costco yesterday. Most things were in stock. A little bit crowded. Didn't see beans, rice, eggs, or the 4# bag of quinoa, which is good because it suggests that some folks are actually hoarding intelligently. We actually got one 32-pack of TP since they had it and were allowing one pack per shopper, just in case this lasts longer than expected, but it wasn't a panic purchase More of a why not since we have room for it and will get used eventually virus or not.

Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine apparently have been tested by some docs in France as well as China but the results from China are being held by their government.

Given how this thing started, the lack of transparency and the attempt to blame the United States if anyone still believes that the Communist government of China is our friend is completely delusional.

Went to GE yesterday, no TP or liquid soap, but plenty of bar soap. Fresh stuff like fruit, salad, etc. we’re abundant, but things like pasta sauce, boxed pasta, salad dressing, etc. we’re all ravaged still. Only TP they had was GE brand, which a) was limited to 1 per person, and b) looked like it would rip my balls clean off if I tried to use it.

Less than a week ago the US was not in the Top 10 for confirmed cases or deaths. Now the US is #6 in both and climbing the charts.

We're still in denial. Beaches in Florida are PACKED with kids on spring break and families acting like this is a three week government mandated vacation.

You must have an interesting way of using it ...

But we're 54th (if I counted right) in cases per population! (But, I mean, we're actually testing now, so... as much as anything we're just finding what's already out there)

The second part is much more concerning.

My mom just got back from Florida, in a normal year she'd be there another month, and we had discussed it and thought at first it would be best for her to wait down there till the end of April and let the weather warm up here too.... but by late last week, a couple phone calls, and the disparate responses we were seeing between Florida and Ohio made it clear it was best for them to get the fuck out of there.

Get a water filter? Seriously. How many bottles of water do you get for $25? Because you get 1,000 gallons from a typical $25 faucet filter.

On a (lighter?) note, the assholes at 4chan are now calling it The Holocough. I can't even.
