Reading the comments below some of the articles online today, it's hard to believe how many dbags there are out there that were thrilled to see Conan go out last night.
Where is this? On most boards I've read, Leno was destroyed for his decade break from anything remotely funny, let alone his manipulative destruction behind the scenes. This escalated to a new level when he couldn't even make a decent joke with a wealth of material during this scandal.

I don't hate the guy, I just think that Leno is funnier and is better in the 11:30 spot. So while it was really messed up what NBC did to Conan, I can't say that I don't like the idea of getting Leno back where I like to watch him.

Meri, that is exactly why NBC decided to buy out Conan's contract. Their 'brainstorm' didn't work out, and they lost ratings in BOTH time slots, so they decided to retreat to what they knew worked. When Conan was approached to give up his gig, he said NO, or [censored] NO. As he should have. So they bought him out. Did he blacklist himself? Probably not, as other networks will hire him, but not as prominently as NBC had him. PS, anyone, Arsenio, Conan, or any of the variety hosts could have been bumped.

For what it's worth, I applaud Conan for sticking to his guns and forcing the big network to live up to their promises. If they change their collective minds, then they have to face the economic consequences of their decisions.

On another note, haven't seen Leno in ten years, never Conan, as I'm in bed waaaay before their air. And don't care enough to tape it.

Here are a couple of other interesting links regarding Conan's ratings last night compared to Leno's last show. Conan pulled a 7.0 rating and Leno pulled an 8.8. Not too shabby considering Conan was only there for 7 months and Leno for 17 years. The other interesting thing is to see how those numbers carried into the programs that followed, and how much lead in really matters.

To be honest, I never watched that much Conan, or anybody else late night. Just don't watch that much TV. I did see the final episode however, and thought it was fantastic. The times I have caught Conan I enjoyed the show for the most part. Thought the bit was funny with Hanks and I think he claimed to start the Coco thing.

I thought it was interesting at the end how Conan said, despite the speculation what he was allowed and not allowed to say prior to that night, NBC gave him free reign for that last show. Then he chose to take the higher ground and thank them for giving him opportunities for the last 20 years. Classy way to go out. Despite Will Ferrell being a horrible singer, the Free Bird song at the end with Conan playing guitar was amusing.

Yeah, the instrumental portion of that was pretty sweet, but Farrell did not get it done for me, either. I kinda spent the song mentally looking the other way, trying to minimize my awareness of how off he was--too bad, given that it was the very last thing on the show. But, again, the musicians kinda made up for it (if I squinted my ears really tight).

reading typos from a newspaper (you know, the kind of comedy your monitor can deliver effectively)
street interviews where people pretend to be idiots to get on TV, and are rewarded for unconvincing efforts

well, that's pretty much it.
