The slightly shocking revelation on Letterman--last night, I think it was--came during a bit about Leno. DL actually said Leno forced Johnny Carson out. Even The Late Shift take on that was that Leno's agent/producer was the villain planting daggers in the news, etc., without Jay's knowledge or participation. I'm inclined to think Letterman would know better than most--he and Johnny were tight. I'm not surprised that it could be true, just surprised because in all these years it's the first time I've heard DL say it. (He must really hate Leno's gutz.)

Before commencing his new gig at Fox, I'd adore to see Conan show up as a guest on Letterman--say, maybe, just coincidentally coinciding with Leno's "first" Tonight Show.

Once again I'll state that I don't watch any of these shows and I don't have a dog in the race, but if Conan lost 40% of Leno's ratings on Tonight what is he going to get going up against Letterman and Leno? It would be an advantage starting at 11, but I bet his rating will tank at 11:30. It seems to me that Conan is a niche host that will probably never be accepted by the majority of people. The really interesting thing will be to see if Leno can regain his advantage over Letterman. Just judging by past ratings a year from now I bet Leno and Letterman will be in a dead heat with Conan taking 3rd in the 11:30-midnight time slot. So does Conan stay in LA or does he go back to NY?

I think you're right about Conan having a strong niche following, but I also don't think it's fair to judge his performance against Letterman and Leno yet.

It's a fact that Leno's show was killing NBC's news stations and that's what brought this on. Those news stations didn't change their act, but their ratings dramatically declined. It's hard to believe that people will just stick on a channel because they were already there, but I guess that's how it works. I read an article saying that Leno's average 10pm audience was around 5 million compared w/ CBS's 10pm shows bringing in 17 million. How was Conan supposed to win over the 11:30 crowd if no one ever showed up?

I've heard more than a few people at work say that they never watched him until these last 2 weeks, but that they thought he was hilarious. I think the college crowd definitely leans toward Conan, and that his fans are still growing into his sense of humor (if that makes sense).

This is all wishful thinking. I'm willing to bet that you're right with your prediction of how things look in a year, but I think Conan can do a lot better than NBC let him. Fox is also a better fit for some of the things that he'll want to do w/ his show... i.e. masturbating bear.

Does anybody know what Leno's ratings were like compared to how Carson finished up?

I've heard the narrative about Letterman beating Leno at first until the Hugh Grant appearance, but I've never seen anything comparing his viewership to his predecessors in those first few months.

Even by those accounts, Leno struggled too starting off - and he had the benefit of a stronger primetime schedule and nobody trying to steal his job.

I'll watch Conan whatever network he's on. I've been a fan since the early days, going back to when I was in high school.

I don't know how much I'd trust Letterman's account. From everything I've ever heard and read, he is a bitter man with a lot of issue. Though, who knows, it might be true.

As for your idea of Conan going on Letterman on Leno's first night back, I would also love to see it. And unless his agreement with NBC prevents it, Conan should follow out the entire week by going on Kimmel, Ferguson, O'Reilley (replays during the 11-12 hour and O'Reilley hates NBC), and the Daily Show--heck, if Stewart is up for it, let Conan guest host it one of those nights.

I don't understand how anybody even gives a fuck about Leno. He's not funny. He's never been funny. The 2 funny things he does are Headlines and Jaywalking.....and both of those are funny because of other people.

Letterman is funny. Conan is funny. Conan with Andy Richter is funnier than anything else on.

I don't understand any of this. Networks should be fighting over who gets Conan.
