Crew signs Costa Rican forward Jairo Arrieta

Striker will join Crew from Deportivo Saprissa when transfer window opens June 27

The Columbus Crew announced today that it has acquired prolific Costa Rican striker Jairo Arrieta, who will be officially added to the Crew roster and become available for selection when the transfer window opens on June 27 and upon receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 Visa. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

The 28-year-old forward joins the Crew from Deportivo Saprissa of the Costa Rican First Division, where he has scored 45 goals over the last five seasons and was goal scoring runner-up in the 2011 Campeonato de Invierno.

?Jairo is a proven goal scorer who we have had our eye on for some time,? said Crew head coach Robert Warzycha. ?He is quick and agile in and around the box, and we expect him to be a great addition to our attack.?

This is great news. The forward position has been a disappointment this season, for me. Emilio Renteria just hasn't performed well to this point. Hopefully Jairo can provide an attacking presence and wake Milo and Olman up a bit.

More good news for the Crew. We're playing a Canadian team this weekend, so a win could be attainable. 2-0 against Canadian clubs, 0-3-1 against U.S. based clubs. 3 points, here we come!!

I'm not too confident going against Vancouver. They've got a few new faces and they seem to be much improved. Should be a good game though.

They're a good club, but they haven't won a road game yet. Then again, NYRB has been a bad road club too, and they destroyed us at Crew Stadium.

Well, let's face it... Not every team has a Thierry Henry on their side.

I hated every minute of that game, but the fanboy in me was pumped that Henry was scoring goals.

HUGE signing. I've had my fingers crossed about him for a while now and so glad it's finally official. Too bad we can't add him to the starting lineup immediately, because we could surely use him.

Dude is a fire plug out there and has a nose for the goal. And despite being average height, he's surprisingly good with the ball in the air. I LOVE thinking we'll have a strike partnership of Renteria/Vargas/Arrieta come mid-season. That could be a really dangerous trio once Renteria breaks his drought and our midfield, particularly Milo, develops better chemistry with each other (and hopefully gets back to being healthy).

I'm with Menardo... I don't feel all that confident in our boys against Vancouver, but you bring up a good point. And I think having O'Rourke back at D-Mid makes a huge difference as well. I'd be a whole lot more confident against these guys if we just had one of James/Mendez/Balchan healthy enough to play center back with Marshall. The musical chairs experiment back there ain't workin'

Crew have had two goals disallowed so far. One call, a good one, as Gaven had strayed offside by about 3 feet. No complaints there.

Second one, may be the worst call I've ever seen. I've still not gotten an explanation as to why the goal was disallowed. Came on a set piece, with Williams towards the top of the box. Shirts got tangled, and I'm assuming the ref called the foul on Williams rather than just letting them play. Anyways, he gets away from the defender he apparently "fouled", runs to the far post, and puts the ball into the net. No goal though. :shake:

Columbus Crew will win this game. They look like they are maturing as a team, and building a lot of chemistry in the attacking third (which will only improve once Arrieta arrives).

Aaron Schoenfeld is absolutely terrible. Every time he touches the ball, he turns it over. He probably wouldn't be so bad if he wasn't playing alongside virtually the same player (Vargas). There's no need for two 6'3"+ players playing at forward.

Poor job by Gruenebaum, Crew trail 0:1, completely against the run of play.

That screw job on the one disallowed goal now looms even larger.

Care to shed light? I missed it when it happened live, saw it during halftime and couldn't figure it out. The only thing I could think of was a foul with the shirt pulling, but it looked pretty 50/50 to me.

Marshall had his shirt nearly over his fucking head, no call. I don't get the thought process of these refs.

I didn't see it live either, just a couple replays. There didn't seem to be anything in it. I'm perplexed as to the ref's reasoning.

And now Marshall gets booked for going up for a 50/50 ball with the keeper. SMH.
