NHL.com - NHL Entry Draft Prospect Profiles: Moore, John

NHL Central Scouting’s Jack Barzee
“I watched John Moore as an underage player and I knew he was a must see player for this year; he hasn’t disappointed me one bit. His first two strides are like Paul Coffey and he has been labeled as a world-class skater. He is poised with the puck, he gets his shots through to the net and he has gotten a lot stronger this season. He resembles (Calgary Flames) defenseman Jordan Leopold and similar to Leopold at the same age he needs to get a little bit better at playing more aggressive and more physical, but John is going to be a one-two defenseman in the NHL.”
Chicago Steel head coach Steven R. Poapst
Strengths:
“John is a gifted skater with tremendous skill that allows him to create time and space with the puck and offensive opportunities. He passes the puck like a pro and has a big time shot as well.”

Weaknesses: “His defensive zone play and reading defensive rushes are the main areas in his game that he needs to continue to work on and improve on.”

Overall: “John is a true leader that approaches the game as a player that needs to get better everyday. His skills combined with his skating ability are what set him apart from the rest. He continues to grow and mature as a player and leader and continues to improve his overall game each day he comes to the rink.”

Sounds like Howson is ecstatic to pick up Moore, especially that late. The paper suggested that the first trade was made when they figured Moore (among others) wouldn't be available at 16. After 16 came and went, Howson was talking to everyone with the up-coming picks trying to move back up to get Moore.

The mock drafts I looked at had him going anywhere from 9th to 19th, with most of them having him in the mid-teens. Sounds like a good value pick.

The remainder of the CBJ draft:
2.26 (56th overall) - Kevin Lynch, C
4.3 (94th) - David Savard, D
5.16 (137th) Thomas Larkin, D
6.16 (167th) - Anton Blomqvist
7.16 (197th) - Kyle Neuber, RW

best skater in the draft imo.

its all but official okt wont be tendered. manny wants top six money/term, howson and co are not willing to offer that to a guy who put up 11/24/35 playing 2/3 of the year at centre with a point per game player (nash). great face off man, but a checking line centre who doesnt check...

someone asked me why rick nash is hockeybuzz (ek) default for "breaking news" ill say this frankly. at this point one player represents the biggest ufa ever in hockey. that player wears #61. some may find that an exageration, ill ask them who is one of the top five penalty killers in the league? 40 goal scorere, power forward with elite top end speed...

i honeslty believe that the reality is if an "honest" offer is provided it will be accepted. it likely wont happen 7/1.

If that's the case, then why dick around and only give him a 5 year offer ? There should be no dancing there: He's a Jacket and needs to stay that way, so why not just give him 7/10/12 yrs, rather than pissing him off with a 5 year offer?

It wasn't the length of the contract he is mad about. It was the amount of the offer. I think Howson tried to get him on the cheap and he isn't having any of that. That is what I gather from what I have read.

you have to keep in mind that they know that nash wants to stay here. they are going to try and get the best deal for the club. if i was the GM i would try to wrap up a 10 year deal. if it's 5 or less and cbj doesn't compete for a cup years down the road he could bolt for another team to try and get a cup.
