Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

Ah. Well, the only reason I bring it up is because A) it doesn't seem like current ownership gives a damn about professional hockey in Columbus and B) they're apparently losing $11 million a year because of a bad lease deal with Nationwide. I don't know how they'd be willing to stay in Columbus with those losses. Bettman and Balsillie's comments said that the market was too good for relocation. Something has to be done..

If you (or anyone) don't know the story, they were kind of forced into an unfavorable lease agreement because this sin tax didn't pass originally and the arena was built privately. Nationwide won't re-negotiate, and the only way to even break even is to apparently sell the arena to the county (also terrible, look what they've done to other local venues) and sell naming rights to Nationwide (or open it to bidders).

I don't know how they'd be willing to stay in Columbus with those losses. lets say (80m) with a asset increase of about (well low ball and say 120m) and you have a gain of 40m. cash flow problems yes, but you have to keep in mind its now what id call a "maturing" market. 10 years ago people in columbus couldnt tell you a hockey puck from a burnt biscuit... now it is considered one of the better smaller markets in all of hockey. Bettman and Balsillie's comments said that the market was too good for relocation. Something has to be done..
neither wants to step in and interupt something that is growing/developing.

If you (or anyone) don't know the story im relatively aware of the story..., they were kind of forced into an unfavorable lease agreement not exactly. columbus originall was going to have the whalers franchise, they arena was going to be apid for by tax money. lamar hunt, one arean, then no suites at the osu arena, blah blah yaddy dah irrelevant history lesson blah...because this sin tax didn't pass originally and the arena was built privately. Nationwide won't re-negotiate says who? the reality is a-b (ie in bev shoved this one out their to the public first....), and the only way to even break even is to apparently sell the arena to the county (also terrible, look what they've done to other local venues)hunnington park? and sell naming rights to Nationwide (or open it to bidders).

The second part of my post wasn't meant for you. :tongue2:

But the story I heard had some mistakes, apparently. About the county ownership comment.. The county hasn't really done any good for any other venues that they own.. Huntington Park is nice, but it's also brand new.

I've been reading some articles/discussions/listening to media comments on this issue, which is probably where I got myself into trouble with some of the comments I made.. next time I'll just stick to your news/comments, since they're always the most reliable.

oh no im not saying that. i am kind of implying at this point the story maybe a tad stretched and spun (as typical with nearly anything political). the jackets have put their spin on the thing, a-b theirs and im waiting on the country/state to spin it their way...

it is certainly worth discussing.

Huh. Didn't expect to see Cincy on there.
they had a wha (the other pro hockey league at the time) in the 70s, close to pitt/det, a good amount of fans of both. cincy still has minor league hockey, good sized city, etc. like i said above, i posted it in the blue jackets thread, why? need to spread the team around in ohio, dayton, cincy, clev. (toledo likely will be uber tought to pull from wings do to geo proximity) also note indy on the list. okc is also interesting. south florida makes sense with retirees from the two rust belt cities.

coles a lw, columbus at this point is in no shortage of lw. (even if you consider nash a w in general as he probably played more shifts on the rw than lw last year...)

Dany Heatley asked for a trade. Think there'd be any interest?
signed through 13-14 at 7.5m per. averaged 40 goals the last two years and the two years before that hit 50 and the 100+ palteau. big money, big scorer, heck of a winger. id doubt you see him in the union blue though...

Didn't figure there'd be much of a shot for Heatley, but with a guy of his talent I figured I'd bring it up. Ottawa fans are saying he's the lesser of their big three. They're excited about what he'll bring in a trade, although him demanding a trade isn't going to help them at all. A little confused that he's asking for a trade after signing a big, long-term deal last year.

I'm not a fan of Cole.. so I'm glad it doesn't sound like I'll have to root for him. :)

which is interesting since alfie is what 36? not many mega deals yet in the post lockout era, i doubt he pulls the kind of fans in ottawa might think. i dont think teams will give up multiple #1s, draft picks, roster players, prospects. but who knows an idiot is born everyday... and the redden deal proves that you dont have to look far to find out where the idiot and his $ parts...

hey, i never said he wouldnt go to the flyers....
:wink2:

joking aside i doubt he (or most other lw will end up in columbus barring a multiple player trade).
but who knows ive been wrong before and things change quickly, certainly if the right deal is on the table...

bold.

I guess the good thing about Heatley is that you know he can play.

Then again, the last noteworthy Senator who left was the guy you mentioned, Wade Redden. That's working out well for the Rangers.

They have a couple guys making way too much money.. Redden, Gomez, Drury (?), Rozsival (?). They have some problems.
