Just because the officiating sucked yet again in a series doesn't mean they shouldn't call a penalty when they see it no matter the timeframe in the game.
Except that it is inconsistent. If you are going to let things slide, let them slide. A hook is a hook, a board is a board, interference is interference, 6 skaters is 6 skaters. All of those have gray areas where they ask officials to use some judgment as to whether it merits a penalty. (Sure, it is strictly written that the player leaving has to be within 5 feet of the bench, but that's still a call where they have some leeway as to whether it affects the play.) They swallowed their whistles for most of the 2nd and all of the 3rd before that call. That's what's frustrating.
The only penalties that would have been acceptable to me (on either team) would be the blatantly obvious ones with an advantage gained or one where the rule is so strictly written that you don't have any choice (namely: delay of game for shooting the puck into the stands).
And you know what, Mike? The Wings were winning the series regardless of the call. Nobody doubts that for a second. It's just a frustrating as hell way for the series to end when the Jackets have been beaten up the rest of the series, are finally playing a decent game, and the only call in the last 30 minutes of game time is that one.
You understand the frustration. You have your own frustration with the NHL officiating. Let us have ours.
(i.e. Go fuck yourself :p)
EDIT - My real point...if they hadn't called it, would anybody be up in arms over it?
