Rick Nash, left, controls the puck against Viktor Kozlov of the Capitals. Nash scored two goals, including one short-handed.

The Blue Jackets have reached a critical point in their season. They know that if they plan on being in the playoff race this spring, they can't wait much longer to assert themselves in the Western Conference standings. They can no longer accept playing well as a substitute for victories.

Put another way: The Jackets might be close to naming rookie Steve Mason the starting goaltender.

The puck escapes from a cloud of ice as the Blue Jackets' Jan Hejda and the Capitals' Viktor Kozlov collide.

As they stood single file in the locker-room hallway, center R.J. Umberger offered some final words for captain Rick Nash as the Blue Jackets took the ice last night.
"I told him, 'We need a big game tonight, big boy,' " Umberger said. "I had a feeling he was going to do something special."

Great game last night.

Moving forward I think it has to be Mason's job to lose in goal. He stood tall against Ovechkin several times last night.

Love to have seen what he could have done against the Wings the other night.

Tough stretch coming up with games against Vancouver, San Jose and Anaheim.

HOLY MOLEY WHAT A GOALIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Steve Mason stands tall tonight against the Canucks as the Blue Jackets win 3-2.

Great saves by Mason as he pretty much cements himself as the starting goaltender.

The Blue Jackets now head west for a tough stretch.

I would be happy if that were the case but I think the Pascal will need to play 40% of the games for this team to be sucessful. Pazzy needs to get in shape so Mason can be placed in a position to be sucessful. It seems that most elite teams have 2 goaltenders that can both play.

Nice to see the boys win one in the final five minutes instead of losing it. That was a fantastic save by Mason against Wellwood.

Not sure what to do about the goalies. Leclaire is under contract for 3 more years at a very reasonable salary. A part of me says there's no way they should move him with Mason being as young as he is and no other real option if Mason were to get injured. Another part of me says that with the combo of his potential, contract, age, and performance (last season), they should be able to get some real quality in a trade. Maybe let him go for either a top-line center or a good back-up goalie plus a point man for the PP. No clue who would even be available in a scenario like that.

Before the PP goal last night, they were 2 for their last 53. That's disgusting. They've outsocred opponents 55-42 5-on-5 but have been outscored 31-15 on special teams. Oh, to think where this team could be with even a medicore PP and PK. :smash:

Andrew Murray is exuberant after tying the score at 2 midway through the third period with his third goal of the season.

In the middle of a tornado of flailing arms, grinding legs and swinging hockey sticks, Blue Jackets rookie goaltender Steve Mason saw the puck out of the corner of his eye.
"I don't know what the (heck) I did," Mason said. "A little bit of instinct. I just saw it and I reacted."
Sprawling back toward the net, and flipping on his belly, Mason extended his right arm and swatted away a glorious point-blank scoring chance by Vancouver's Kyle Wellwood with only 1:43 remaining.

Jackets notebook: Earlier save against Sedin changed game

Tuesday, December 2, 2008 3:08 AM
By Tom Reed

The Columbus Dispatch

The saves everyone will recall last night were made in the final frantic minutes as Blue Jackets goaltender Steve Mason was scrambling around, channeling his inner Dominik Hasek.
But Mason's heroics in the dying moments of a 3-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks were made possible in part by a puck he stopped earlier in the third period.

Bob Hunter commentary: Blue Jackets' potential for improvement encouraging

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock: "Of the teams that are greasing around on the sixth, seventh and eighth spot, we're a team that has a chance to get better."

Somewhere in those bleak Blue Jackets power-play numbers, amidst all of those woeful whiffs, frustrating fumbles and squandered chances, there is a faint glimmer of hope.
Given the team's losing history, optimism sprouts about as often in these parts as a sunflower in the Sahara. But here's a reluctant admission: The Blue Jackets' glass actually looks half-full to me.
Crazy? OK, maybe I have been known to strum my lips on occasion for no discernible reason. But here's my theory, anyway:
The Jackets went into last night's game with Vancouver ranked 30th -- dead last -- in the NHL on the power play, despite having some offensive players who make that number seem unlikely. They went into the game 22nd on the penalty kill, with the same kind of qualifier. In both cases, logic dictates that they should be, if not sensational, better than they have been so far.

I think, given that the trade deadline isn't for a while yet, they have time to fully evaluate Mason to see if he is "The man". Test his durability and test his skills to see if he truly is ready for the big time.

If the end of January rolls around and he's still the guy, LeClaire will bring the best value in a trade.

As you pointed out, the PP is horrendous. No one is or should be asking for anything approaching what Detroit and PIttsburgh and San Jose are doing on the PP. But you gotta at least get 1 out of 5 to be competitive anymore.

It doesn't even come down to having that top flight centerman anymore, they barely have two complete PP units worthy of the name. They need another playmaker to compliment Nash, that is for sure, but another surefire veteran scorer (like Modin was supposed to be) would definitely help too.

It did help that they didn't have to play against Cro-Magnon man since he's hurt....

Blue Jackets' Torres out with knee trouble
Winger put on IR after slow recovery from ACL surgery

As his teammates were finishing practice, Blue Jackets winger Raffi Torres stood in a Nationwide Arena corridor yesterday wearing a gray T-shirt and blue shorts.
His back was against the wall, his level of frustration almost through the roof.
"They (the Blue Jackets) have told me, 'You've got to work through it, you've got to work through it,' " Torres said of his ailing right knee. "But it's at the point right now where I can't work through it because it's so painful."

Goalie Steve Mason was 5-2-1 with a 2.09 goals-against average and .919 save percentage in November.

The Blue Jackets are riding a winning streak the likes of which hasn't been seen in the NHL in seven years.
Blue Jackets goaltender Steve Mason was named the league's rookie of the month for November yesterday. Teammate Derick Brassard won the honor in October.
The league has not featured back-to-back recipients from the same team since the 2001-02 season. That's when Atlanta's Dany Heatley and Ilya Kovalchuk shared the award in December 2001 and Kovalchuk won it in January 2002.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Stefan Legein, the Blue Jackets prospect who mysteriously quit playing hockey this past summer, is ready to play again.
Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson and Legein's agent, Doug Woods, confirmed to The Dispatch that Legein intends to join the club in Columbus within the next few weeks.
"I don't think anything has changed with Stefan other than he wants to play again," Woods said. "He misses the game."
