Defenseman Jan Hejda, left, set a Blue Jackets record last season with a plus-20 rating. He's at plus-5 in the young season.

There is nothing loud about Jan Hejda's game or personality.
The defenseman is not the Blue Jackets' biggest hitter or flashiest player or fanciest dresser or most colorful quote.
Even the primary consonants in his name are quiet.
"That type of player and position never get the accolades or credit they deserve," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "Jan plays an unsung type of game."

I had no idea this game wasn't televised tonight (who really cares about the Bearcats playing Texas Southern Methodist for the Blind and Charitable anyway), but the Jackets have allowed 3 goals on 8 friggin shots :smash:

Ugh. Glad I passed on the ticket last night. Mirror-image of the Buffalo game. Carried the play for the first two periods but weren't getting the high-quality chances while the Oil made theirs count.

Sounds like the 3rd period was a train wreck. I turned off the radio in lieu of the Cavs game after goal 4. Good choice there.

NHL
Leaky Leclaire lets Oilers blast Blue Jackets 7-2

Tuesday, November 18, 2008 11:04 PM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

For the first two periods tonight, it looked like the Blue Jackets were destined to be sore-luck losers.
But after a horrendous three-minute stretch late in the third, it became clear: the Jackets got exactly what they deserved.
The Edmonton Oilers, fresh off a shutout loss in Detroit only 24 hours earlier, blasted the Blue Jackets 7-2 before a crowd of 12,689 in Nationwide Arena.

Jackets notebook: Special weakness hurts
Man-down or man-up situations keep costing team valuable points
Wednesday, November 19, 2008 3:10 AM
By Tom Reed

The Columbus Dispatch

The Blue Jackets have developed into a fairly formidable club at even strength.
But short of padlocking the penalty box doors, the Jackets must find alternative means of weathering stretches when either they or their opponent has a man advantage.
The Edmonton Oilers dominated the special-teams play last night on the way to a 7-2 rout of the Jackets in Nationwide Arena.

Michael Arace commentary: Test at point aside, Chimera getting better with age

Wednesday, November 19, 2008 3:10 AM
By Michael Arace commentary

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

When word surfaced that the Blue Jackets were going to try Jason Chimera as a point man on their power play, eyebrows were raised in Columbus, and in 29 other NHL cities. But there was some sense to the experiment. Seriously.

The Jackets' power play has turned so bad, and Chimera has become so . . . what is the word? Reliable? Potent? Calm? Onside? In any case, trying him on a point, a shocking development at any other point in his career, became a worthy attempt.
OK, it didn't go well. Twenty-nine seconds into the Jackets' first man advantage last night against the Edmonton Oilers, Chimera got nailed with a high-sticking penalty. Five seconds before Chimera was to be released from the box, Sheldon Souray blasted a slap shot past Pascal Leclaire and the Oilers took a 1-0 lead. It was their first shot of the game.

Blue Jackets: Frustrated Norrena is the odd goalie out

Friday, November 21, 2008 3:11 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

These are difficult days for Blue Jackets goaltender Fredrik Norrena, and they don't appear to be getting easier any time soon.
In practice yesterday, Norrena saw only limited duty. Pascal Leclaire and Steve Mason got most of the work. On Saturday, when the Blue Jackets play in Atlanta, Mason will be the starter and Leclaire the backup, with Norrena a healthy scratch for the fourth straight game.

Jackets notebook: Boll enduring second-year slump

Friday, November 21, 2008 3:11 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

If Blue Jackets fans think winger Jared Boll looks different this season, they're not alone. Coach Ken Hitchcock agrees.
"It's what all second-year players go through," Hitchcock said. "As much as you try to change it, you can't change it. They all go through it. He's in the middle of it, and he's coming out of it now."
"It" is commonly referred to as a sophomore jinx. Typically, it's scoring wingers who go through second-year slumps, not fighters and agitators.

Derek Dorsett, right, showed plenty of heart in his 10 games with the Jackets this season.

The Blue Jackets passed up an obvious choice yesterday for what they believe will be a more beneficial one -- even if does nothing to aid their troubled power play.
Instead of promoting an offensive defenseman from minor-league Syracuse to replace defenseman Rostislav Klesla, who went on injured reserve, the Jackets called up feisty winger Derek Dorsett.

It's becoming apparent that it might take awhile before Kris Russell is an impact player for the Blue Jackets.
The Jackets were counting on Russell to handle one of the top two power-play units this season. But he struggled enough that team officials determined it would be better for him to have some success in the American Hockey League.

Blue Jackets: Defense making for good offense
Blue-liners boost scoring by coming out of zone
Saturday, November 22, 2008 3:19 AM
By Tom Reed

The Columbus Dispatch

A day later, Blue Jackets assistant coach Gord Murphy still could not believe the video evidence before his eyes.
The image on his computer screen showed Jackets defenseman Jan Hejda joining a rush, driving to the net and screening Edmonton Oilers goaltender Dwayne Roloson.
By nature, Hejda is less offensive than the lyrics of Amy Grant. But his unexpected foray helped produce a Kristian Huselius goal, one of the few Blue Jackets highlights Tuesday in a 7-2 loss to the Oilers.

Jackets notebook: Torres' play has him down
Jackets give forward leeway in return from knee surgery
Saturday, November 22, 2008 3:11 AM
By Tom Reed

The Columbus Dispatch

The voice of left winger Raffi Torres barely rose above a whisper in the noisy Blue Jackets locker room, but his words conveyed a powerful sentiment.
"I wouldn't be playing myself right now if I were making the lines," Torres said Thursday. "There is a certain level I know I can play at, and right now I'm letting the team down."

ATLANTA -- The Blue Jackets had to leave home to find themselves.
Last night, they got back to the style that suits them best -- a goal by Rick Nash, flawless play by their goaltender, and a smothering defensive approach that keeps coach Ken Hitchcock in a good mood.
The Blue Jackets earned a 2-0 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers in front of an announced crowd of 15,561 in Philips Arena.

Dorsett, Boll in lineup for energy boost

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

ATLANTA -- With two extra forwards on the roster and a top six that appears to be settling, Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock could have come up with a number of different configurations for his third and fourth forward lines last night against the Thrashers in Philips Arena.
Hitchcock opted for energy.
