BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Blue Jackets have been many things in an unpredictable, sometimes maddening, but rarely dull start to the season.
Until last night in Game No. 17, however, the Blue Cross Blue Shield Jackets had not been completely healthy.
It's not a bad look for them.

Backup goalies make easy prey, but imply disrespect

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- It seems like the Blue Jackets are facing more backups these days than Joe the Plumber.
The Buffalo Sabres started goaltender Patrick Lalime last night instead of Ryan Miller, marking the fifth time in the past eight games the Jackets have drawn an opponent's second stringer.
The Jackets aren't complaining. They improved to 5-0 against backups with a 6-1 victory at HSBC Arena. But the players also understand the perception attached to a steady diet of subs.
"They don't show Columbus a lot of respect by playing (the backups)," captain Rick Nash said. "But that's OK as long as we get the two points. That's all that matters."

God the officiating is horrific in the NHL AGAIN this year....
Bucky Katt;1327526; said:Which call didn't you like? The trip on Commodore?
BuckeyeMike80;1327727; said:Yeah, that was pretty weak. The other two were legit though.
Bucky Katt;1328085; said:Agreed. The first call was fine and not much you can do about the delay of game.
Tough loss tonight. Although, give me 3 out of 4 possible points for every pair of back-to-back road games and I'll be pretty damn happy.
God I hate watching Minnesota games. Their system is not conducive to "exciting" or "fun" hockey. 60 minutes of grind. It's not helped when the refs don't call interference on either team. Ugh.
Wild 3Blue Jackets 2, SO
Emotions not as raw following this defeat

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Three weeks ago, the Blue Jackets left Xcel Energy Center in a rage after a 2-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild.
"We felt like we got robbed coming out of that one," center R.J. Umberger said.
Last night, the Jackets lost to the Wild again, this time by a 3-2 count. But there was a much different tenor in the dressing room.
This was a shootout loss, so the Blue Jackets still get a point in the standings. And in a difficult back to back this weekend against Buffalo and Minnesota, the Jackets took three out of a possible four points.
Kristian Huselius and Rick Nash scored last night, and the Blue Jackets came back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to force overtime. As the game wore on, Columbus seemed to take more control.

Power-play help for Jackets may be on trade front

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
The Blue Jackets' power play is like Ian Baker-Finch's golf swing. It's so critically flawed, so toxic to the eyes, that it's best to look away, lest you be permanently scarred.
For now, it appears the fix will have to come from within. Christian Backman, who has ranged from atrocious to shaky the past month, will keep getting a shot on the point because he's the only player in the group of defensemen with anywhere close to a power-play skill set.
But general manager Scott Howson will keep his eyes open, and lots can change pretty quickly in the NHL.

Blue Jackets: Power play seeking an edge
Dead last in NHL, Blue Jackets aren't too worried -- yet

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
The Blue Jackets spent only 47 seconds on the power play in Saturday's 3-2 shootout loss to the Minnesota Wild.
That should be considered a blessing.
The dirty little secret within their 8-7-3 start is that the Blue Jackets' power play has been anything but a man advantage.
"We have the percentage we have because we've missed some glorious opportunities," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "I don't look at it like, 'Man, we're dysfunctional.' "
The numbers, though, scream dysfunction.
Consider:
? The power play is last in the NHL, at 11.9 percent, almost a full percentage point behind No. 29 Florida.

Jackets notebook: Head shots won't be tolerated

The Columbus Dispatch
The Blue Jackets returned to practice yesterday and found an NHL memo prominently displayed in their locker room.
It deals with a crackdown on unnecessary blows to the head. Several players and coach Ken Hitchcock said they welcomed the league's tougher stand.
"Anything that is intentional to the head is bad for the individual and bad for the game," forward Fredrik Modin said.
