Columbus center Derick Brassard leads the Blue Jackets with 20 points and a plus-9 rating, making him the early favorite for Calder Trophy honors as the NHL's top rookie.

ATLANTA -- The Blue Jackets reached the (almost) quarter pole of the 2008-09 season Saturday with one of their more convincing performances yet, a 2-0 win over the Atlanta Thrashers.

It has been well reported that the Blue Jackets, under general manager Scott Howson, overhauled their roster last summer. But it's still staggering to consider that 10 of the 20 players in Saturday's lineup weren't Blue Jackets regulars last season.

Rick Nash leads the Blue Jackets with 10 goals and has a five-game streak that started against the Coyotes on Nov. 12.

Two weeks ago, Blue Jackets captain Rick Nash was approaching a dubious personal record.
Five games later, he's closing in on a distinguished one.
If Nash scores Wednesday night against Phoenix, he'll tie a career mark by scoring a goal in six consecutive games. (He did it during the 2005-06 season.)

Daily NHL grind proves challenging for Voracek
Sustaining high-level intensity isn't easy for rookies

Jake Voracek, left, of the Blue Jackets has slowed down after a fast start but remains fourth in rookie scoring in the NHL with 11 points.

Thirty years after making his pro hockey debut, Wayne Gretzky is still learning what it takes for a teenager to play in a man's league.
If the Great One is still figuring it out, Blue Jackets rookie winger Jake Voracek should not let his recent slide in point production consume him.
Gretzky, coach of the Phoenix Coyotes, returns to Nationwide Arena on Wednesday to face Voracek and the Blue Jackets.
The Phoenix coaching staff is taking a new approach with its younger players this season, trying to give them a day off once every seven to 10 days in hopes of recharging them physically and mentally.

The defining moment in the early career of an NHL player comes not when he plays his first game or scores his first goal but when the general manager and/or coach calls him into a private meeting and says the magic words.
"I just say: 'It's time to get a place,' " Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson said. "They don't ask too many questions. They know exactly what it means."
Translation: Check out of the hotel room, kid. You're now a permanent part of the team.
The Blue Jackets have not had that conversation with rookie goaltender Steve Mason, but one gets the sense that it's coming soon.

Derick Brassard wanted to learn more about shooting the puck, so he turned to Blue Jackets TV analyst Danny Gare, who had two 50-goal seasons during his long NHL career.

Blue Jackets rookie center Derick Brassard found another reason to stay on the ice after practice yesterday.
This summer, while living in the Columbus condominium of Blue Jackets television analyst Danny Gare, Brassard watched a DVD of Gare's sweater-retirement ceremony in Buffalo three seasons ago. On the DVD were some of Gare's highlights during his 14-year NHL career, including two trips to the All-Star Game and two 50-goal seasons.
"Danny was a great player," Brassard said.

Jesus Christ. The CBJ had EVERY opportunity against Phoenix tonight and just couldn't buy a goal when it counted. What a tough loss.

The thing that really pisses me off is the 5 on 3 they had tonight. If a team gets a 5 on 3 against Columbus it's almost a given that they'll score within 15 seconds. The Jackets couldn't even get one on net during a 54 second two man advantage. What a heartbreaker that one is.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sg1VQWLfgvs]YouTube - Nikolai Zherdev vs Steven Stamkos Nov 26, 2008[/ame]

Where was that Zherdev last year?!?

That said, it was a dirty hit by Stamkos and it very easily could have been called boarding if Zherdev had be hit more from behind.

The Blue Jackets' Derick Brassard, right, celebrates Kristian Huselius' goal in the first period that opened the night's scoring.

Blue Jackets left winger Kristian Huselius scored a goal last night, so it wasn't an awful night for the veteran play-maker.
But given Huselius' attention to detail, he likely drifted off to sleep a few hours later thinking not of the goal he scored but the ones he didn't. Huselius had at least six other prime scoring chances he wasn't able to convert, either because of great saves by a red-hot goaltender or because Huselius fired the puck high or wide.
It was that kind of night for the Blue Jackets, who lost 3-2 to the Phoenix Coyotes before 14,569 in Nationwide Arena.

The Blue Jackets' R.J. Umberger, right, and the Coyotes' Steven Reinprecht fight for the puck during the first period.

As Derek Dorsett challenged Coyotes agitator Daniel Carcillo to a first-period fight, the Blue Jackets rookie immediately removed his helmet. Carcillo reciprocated by shedding his lid.
In the twisted world of tough-guy logic, it's a mutual agreement to be smart while pummeling each other. Yes, somebody might wind up concussed, but let's not break a hand on a plastic helmet.

Defenseman Kris Russell has returned to the Blue Jackets after a month with minor-league Syracuse.

Defenseman Kris Russell settled back into the Blue Jackets dressing room yesterday as if he'd never left. Long after practice ended, Russell sat around and traded barbs and jabs with three other pillars of the Blue Jackets' youthful exuberance -- center Derick Brassard, and wingers Jared Boll and Jake Voracek.
"Shaky's back in action," Boll snapped, as Russell -- known affectionately as "Little Shake" -- came into the room after practice.

The Red Wings' Jiri Hudler, left, watches his shot roll past Blue Jackets goalie Pascal Leclaire (31) and Jan Hejda (8) during the second period.

DETROIT -- It was a game that set the art of goaltending back a couple of decades, a night when the best use of the mask was to hide expressions of embarrassment.
Detroit goalie Chris Osgood allowed a goal from the blue line, another from center ice and somehow earned a win.
Osgood was almost jovial laughing off the bizarre events of the evening, one that ended with a 5-3 Red Wings victory over the Blue Jackets.
