Blue Jackets rookie is quick to find fame
Mason remains grounded despite meteoric rise

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

As the door to the Blue Jackets locker room swung open to the media, several players chuckled at the sight of pack journalism gone wild. About 20 members of the local press corps walked to the back corner of the room where rookie goaltender Steve Mason sat in his sweaty gear minutes after the Jackets' 3-0 win over Washington on Saturday night. Fellow rookie winger Jake Voracek, who occupies the adjoining locker, was momentarily trapped by the semicircle enveloping Mason.

Jackets notebook: Players back Legein return if he's serious

Thursday, December 4, 2008 3:32 AM

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- If Stefan Legein proves he's capable of playing in the NHL, Blue Jackets players will welcome him with open arms.
That was the message yesterday, a day after Legein, once considered a top prospect, revealed that he's ready to play hockey again after abruptly quitting the game this summer.
"Stefan's a hockey player," defenseman Marc Methot said. "He knows that now. Having a couple of months off, he's probably aching to get back in, and we're going to support him.

The Blue Jackets' Rick Nash (61) and Rob Blake of the Sharks chase down the puck.

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The Blue Jackets weren't outmanned, just short-handed too many times last night.
The result was a 3-2 loss to the San Jose Sharks before a sold-out crowd of 17,496 in HP Pavilion.
Rick Nash and Fredrik Modin scored goals for the Blue Jackets, who haven't won in San Jose since Jan. 8, 2004.
But this wasn't like most of the losses in the Shark Tank.
It could be said that the Blue Jackets outplayed the Sharks for long stretches.

Jackets notebook: More surgery for Torres; he's out two to four weeks

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The mystery regarding Raffi Torres' right knee should be settled today, when the Blue Jackets right winger undergoes arthroscopic surgery in Minnesota.
Torres, placed on injured reserve this week, is expected to miss two to four weeks, general manager Scott Howson said.
"There's an accumulation of scar tissue," Howson said. "That's part of the problem. The doctors think they know what it is, but they'll find out when they go in with a scope."

Fredrik Modin has four goals and seven assists in 19 games this season.

LOS ANGELES -- Fredrik Modin carried the puck off the wall, away from San Jose Sharks forward Jeremy Roenick and toward the slot, where defenseman Rob Blake approached to cut off Modin's path to goaltender Evgeni Nabokov.
After making two or three moves and head fakes with the puck, Modin shot between Blake's legs and past Nabokov's right pad, tucking it inside the far post.

Blue Jackets notebook: Wasted chances irk Hitchcock
Coach says his team outplayed Sharks early, didn't convert
Saturday, December 6, 2008 3:05 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- The Blue Jackets put forth a hellacious effort Thursday in San Jose, losing 3-2 to a Sharks club that has yet to lose in regulation in their 15 home games.
Coach Ken Hitchcock was not impressed that the Blue Jackets merely pushed the Sharks to the hilt. His postgame comments to reporters -- make that, comment -- lasted seven seconds.

I think I am starting to get a feel for what is plaguing this power play and it's probably not something that will get fixed.

1. and probably the most damning, the mindset of the power play is almost tentative. They are pretty snake bitten by the shorties they keep giving up, but even when they are controlling the puck it appears they aren't in any type of flow or rhythm. This is the most easily fixed IMO.

2. They very rarely work in the middle of the ice while on the power play. Watch even an average power play and you'll see work in the high slot at the very least. Columbus gets pushed to the boards wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy to easily. It happens to Detroit once every 3 years in the playoffs (yes that means they are due this year) and the usually lose that playoff series. This can't be allowed to continue or else that will sink what should be a playoff team otherwise. I don't see this being fixed anytime soon either - this looks and feels more like a scheme thing than a player/personnel thing.

3. The talent level on the line that doesn't have Modin and Nash isn't up to par IMO. While Umberger is on there to even things out a bit, that wouldn't even be a regular line much less a power play for anyone else outside of Atlanta and that isn't a team to copy in the first place. This won't be fixed until the trade deadline maybe.

Kings 3 Blue Jackets 0
Jackets go down quietly in first shutout of season

Sunday, December 7, 2008 3:59 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

LOS ANGELES -- Like so many in recent weeks, this Blue Jackets' loss wasn't about missed scoring chances or bad bounces of the puck.
A 3-0 loss to the Los Angeles Kings last night in front of 15,235 in a half-filled and hush-quiet Staples Center was perhaps the low point of the Blue Jackets' season to this point.
Wayne Simmonds, Kyle Calder and Anze Kopitar scored for the Kings, who had lost three in a row. Jason LaBarbera had 18 saves.
It was the Blue Jackets' first shutout loss of the season -- their first since the second-to-last game of last season -- and it pushed their record below .500 (11-12-3).

Blue Jackets notebook: Penalty kill disappointing
25th-ranked unit was expected to be strong
Sunday, December 7, 2008 3:28 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

LOS ANGELES -- The Blue Jackets' power play has been so bad this season that nobody has noticed their penalty killing.
Expected to be one of the best in the NHL -- and demanded to be one of the top five in the league by coach Ken Hitchcock before the season -- the Jackets went into a game last night against the Los Angeles Kings with the 25th-ranked penalty kill.
"You put your most competitive players on the ice during the kill," Hitchcock said. "And nobody likes it when your most competitive players are out there and they get scored on. The disappointing part for me is we've given the other teams' power play an opportunity to dictate the game."

Anaheim's Ryan Getzlaf celebrates his second goal after beating Columbus goaltender Pascal Leclaire in the second period.

ANAHEIM -- At 2:39 of the third period last night, Blue Jackets defenseman Ole-Kristian Tollefsen emerged from a scrum with a dance partner, Anaheim's Ryan Carter.
The fight started well for Tollefsen, but Carter surged at the end and ended up wrestling Tollefsen off his skates. What followed was scary.
Tollefsen cracked his head on the ice when he landed. He needed a minute or two to get his bearings, and was noticeably wobbly as he left the ice with a teammate holding him up on each side, a towel held to the back of his head because of the bleeding.

Notebook: Hitchcock alters lineup after ugly loss to Kings

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Blue Jackets played so poorly in a 3-0 loss to Los Angeles on Saturday that coach Ken Hitchcock made two lineup changes before last night's game against Anaheim in Honda Center.
Clay Wilson and fellow defenseman Ole-Kristian Tollefsen went into the lineup for defenseman Christian Backman and rookie right winger Jake Voracek.

Jackets notebook | Hitchcock: Be smart, veterans
Some experienced players aren't paying attention to the details, coach says
Tuesday, December 9, 2008 2:55 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock has a reputation for not trusting young players.
But his frustration after a 0-3 trip to the West Coast was directed almost entirely at the Blue Jackets' veterans.
"There are some things in our game right now that are, to me, upsetting, and at times they really anger me," Hitchcock said. "And one of the things we're not doing well is (understanding) the 'time and the score' aspect of games."
