VANCOUVER, British Columbia ? Without goaltender Roberto Luongo, the Vancouver Canucks wouldn?t be in the playoff mix in the Western Conference, let alone first place in the Northwest Division. As Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock hinted at a game-plan meeting yesterday after the morning skate in General Motors Place, he referred to Luongo as "the head of the snake."

Last, but not least, Blue Jackets winger Anson Carter. Vancouver Canucks general manager Dave Nonis isn't big on the "rental player" concept, so don't count on carter returning to pick up where he left off with the Sedin's, unless a short-term contract materializes in the swap. If it's not Vancouver, then another playoff-bound team will add Carter to its mix.

McLean might be a good guy, but the rate his team is playing tonight he won't be around much longer.

you can't go down 3-0 every game and expect to win very many.

And the CBJ "super star" isn't doing anything to help his team.

CALGARY, Alberta ? Life gets tougher in the NHL when the calendar flips to February.
It is right about now, with roughly 10 weeks left in the season, that the Stanley Cup playoff push begins in earnest.
The Blue Jackets, who have never sniffed the playoffs, simply aren?t ready to compete in these high-octane games on a nightly basis. Oh, they have their moments, but they aren?t sustained. Last night was further proof.

CALGARY, Alberta ? At first, the Blue Jackets were frustrated by right winger Nikolai Zherdev?s lethargic play. Now they?re worried about his health. Zherdev did not play last night against the Calgary Flames. He didn?t even get out of bed to make the morning skate, the second day he has spent mostly horizontal.

CALGARY, Alberta ? As if a 6-2 loss Friday in Calgary weren?t bad enough, the Blue Jackets might have lost two defensemen to injuries. Ron Hainsey and Ole-Kristian Tollefsen left the game early.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock balanced his lines with the hope of finding more-effective combinations. The Jackets begin a six-game homestand tonight when the Phoenix Coyotes visit Nationwide Arena. Rick Nash moves to right wing, Sergei Fedorov moves from center to left wing and Gilbert Brule moves from wing to center, and gets a promotion.

i only watched the first period and early 2nd last night. but can someone explain to me what the hell happened after the fights and with those penalties? i mean i know the guy serving the 5 should get out before the guys serving for 7. then again should a guy get out of the box, then skate, then go serve the rest of the penalty?

It will be interesting to see if these "private meetings" (read: ass-chewings) have any impact on this squad. I certainly hope Foote and Modin were in there.

Recent experiment: The NHL All-Star Game was on the television and the viewer closed his eyes. What was heard? Stick sounds and puck sounds, naturally. But the ear could make finer delineations.
