THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
VANCOUVER, British Columbia ? Without goaltender Roberto Luongo, the Vancouver Canucks wouldn?t be in the playoff mix in the Western Conference, let alone first place in the Northwest Division. As Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock hinted at a game-plan meeting yesterday after the morning skate in General Motors Place, he referred to Luongo as "the head of the snake."

Last, but not least, Blue Jackets winger Anson Carter. Vancouver Canucks general manager Dave Nonis isn't big on the "rental player" concept, so don't count on carter returning to pick up where he left off with the Sedin's, unless a short-term contract materializes in the swap. If it's not Vancouver, then another playoff-bound team will add Carter to its mix.

CALGARY, Alberta ? Life gets tougher in the NHL when the calendar flips to February.
It is right about now, with roughly 10 weeks left in the season, that the Stanley Cup playoff push begins in earnest.
The Blue Jackets, who have never sniffed the playoffs, simply aren?t ready to compete in these high-octane games on a nightly basis. Oh, they have their moments, but they aren?t sustained. Last night was further proof.

CALGARY, Alberta ? At first, the Blue Jackets were frustrated by right winger Nikolai Zherdev?s lethargic play. Now they?re worried about his health. Zherdev did not play last night against the Calgary Flames. He didn?t even get out of bed to make the morning skate, the second day he has spent mostly horizontal.

It?s that time of the year when non-playoff teams are gutted by rumor or just plain gutted. The Feb. 27 trade deadline is looming.

CALGARY, Alberta ? As if a 6-2 loss Friday in Calgary weren?t bad enough, the Blue Jackets might have lost two defensemen to injuries. Ron Hainsey and Ole-Kristian Tollefsen left the game early.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock balanced his lines with the hope of finding more-effective combinations. The Jackets begin a six-game homestand tonight when the Phoenix Coyotes visit Nationwide Arena. Rick Nash moves to right wing, Sergei Fedorov moves from center to left wing and Gilbert Brule moves from wing to center, and gets a promotion.
