Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

nice season overall, but sad that our highest payed player besides Bob was by far the worst guy on the ice for nearly the entire series. I don't know how they kept putting Wisnewski out there shift after shift, with the exception of his shot off the point on the power play (which rarely was on goal) he was a turnover machine, took bad penalties due to being out of position and generally looked like he was scared to carry the puck. I don't know what they could possibly even do with him moving forward.

Let's see what surgery he has if they announce it. He was skating like a guy whose back wasn't with him. And if that's the case (and I think it is), he's probably closer to done than you'd imagine.

That said, he'd still be the #2 D-man on Detroit. You guys can have Kindl and Quincey

And he's signed for $5.5M per season through the 2016-2017 season too.

Blue Jackets are proud of their season

fedor-tyutin-james-neal.jpg

The Columbus Blue Jackets were the ultimate underdog going into the first round of the playoffs. Their lack of playoff experience was contrasted by the seasoned talent in Pittsburgh. While the team did have the reigning Vezina Trophy winner on their side in Sergei Bobrovsky, there’s no question that Pittsburgh has more big name stars on its roster.

That didn’t stop the Blue Jackets from taking two games in this series — the first playoff wins in their franchise’s history — and giving the Penguins trouble almost every time Pittsburgh thought they were finally beat.

The third period of Game 6 tonight was the perfect example of how this series went. The Blue Jackets were against the ropes, they rallied back, and fell short while still giving their fans reason to hope for the future.

“We did everything we could in the third period…we’re a proud group and we’re really disappointed right now,”Brandon Dubinsky said, per the Blue Jackets’ Twitter account.
The sense of pride despite falling short was brought up by other members of the Blue Jackets as they reflected on their campaign.

“I’m sure the fans as well as myself are all proud of the guys in this room,” Ryan Johansen said.

“Have to thank the fans…the support that we got from them says a lot. There’s a real sense of pride,” coach Todd Richards added.

They’ve set the bar higher going forward. Columbus showed they can compete against a team like Pittsburgh, but turning a promising squad into a major contender is a daunting task. Still, that’s the next step for the Blue Jackets.

It will be interesting to see if the Blue Jackets make any big moves during the off-season seeing that the Horton signing did not work out very well for them this season.

Just sayin': Not too many of the "big move/big name" acquisitions have paid off for the Blue Jackets; think of guys like Foote, Clark, Gaborik, Fedorov, and Carter here.

The Swedish goalie, who was selected 31st overall, spent the past two seasons with Erie of the Ontario League. He posted a 40-32-7 record with a 3.25 goals-against average, a .897 save percentage and six shutouts in 85 games.

Umberger traded to Flyers for F Scott Hartnell:

The acquisition of Hartnell makes the Blue Jackets faster and more physical, and the trading of Umberger comes as a huge relief for Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen. Umberger had requested a trade at his end-of-season meeting with management following a late-season spat with coach Todd Richards over a series of healthy scratches.
"He is the epitome of the type of player we want in our organization,” Kekalainen said in a statement released by the club. “He is a talented, tough, hard-working player who brings valuable experience and leadership on and off the ice.
"We believe he will fit in very well with our group and be an important part of our team moving forward. We would also like to thank R.J. for his years of service to our club and extend our best wishes to him and his family.”
Hartnell is signed through the 2018-19 season at $4.75 million per season. He also has a no-movement clause in his contract.

Great move. I enjoyed watching him play for the Flyers last season. I think he brings even more physicality than Umberger could have brought, and he has a great ability to score. His contract isn't too hateful (wasn't Umby due 7mil or something crazy this season?), and he's signed for a while.

I can't see any negatives coming from this move.

The only positive that Flyers fans seem to be taking is that Umberger's contract is a couple years shorter, in regards to a buyout or cap room, as they are both 32yrs old.

In 78 games Scott Hartnell, playing primarily on the top line, had 20 goals and 32 assists last season. Hartnell had five years remaining on his contract, with a cap hit of $4.75 million per season.

In 74 games R. J. Umberger had 18 goals and 16 assists last season. Umberger has three years left, at $4.6 million per year.

I have to believe that Hartnell will be a better fit (i.e. productive team player) for the Blue Jackets than Umberger was. Anyway the Fliers have to know what they are getting with Umberger as he started his NFL career with them.

Apparently Hartnell is now divorced from his wife: however, I found this old 2009 Philadelphis Flyer rumor funny:

Centerman Jeff Carter is boning the wife of teammate Scott Hartnell. Ouch.

This is a great move for a few reasons:

1) They were going to buy out Umberger if they couldn't trade him. The fact that they got something back is great.

2) The Jackets not only got something back, they upgraded their wing.

3) ..and they didn't even have to retain any of RJ's salary.

Fantastic move that will help the Jackets be even more of a pain in the ass to play against. Hartnell is prone to stupid penalties though.. Really stupid penalties.

We need a tag that says "Johansen = whiny bitch"

http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/1...s-columbus-blue-jackets-discussions-slap-face

He had a good season. That usually doesn't net you a long term deal when you're 21 and when it has (Dany Heatley), it usually doesn't end well. Sign the bridge contract, score 30 goals again and you'll get your big payday. :shake:
I do not understand why he just does not sign a offer sheet or maybe the offers are not coming in at his price :shake: He feels like he got slapped in the face but when they press his agent he says that they do not work that way.
