Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

he Blue Jackets have taken center Ryan Johansen, ranked No. 10 by NHL Central Scouting, with the fourth pick.

That selection sends many a mock draft crashing in flames. He scored 25 goals and 44 assists for Portland of the Western League last season and is the first of four Winterhawks who could go pretty high in the draft. At 6-2, 192, Johansen is another big center. You can't have enough of those.

Johansen, Ryan - NHL.com - NHL Entry Draft Prospect Profiles

NHL Central Scouting’s B.J. MacDonald
"He has good on-ice vision and also angles well on the forecheck. He has the intelligence to play power-play as well as penalty kill. He can be shifty and has the ability to beat a defenseman one-on-one. Once he fills out and gains more strength he could turn raw talent into a valuable center at both ends of rink. He has displayed nice playmaking capabilities and this should continue at the next level."

Portland Winterhawks head coach and GM Mike Johnston
"Ryan Johansen has really good vision. He’s a prototypical big center – good hands, good vision, distributes the puck well, and protects the puck well in order to make plays. He’s a young kid who we use in a lot of different situations, the power play, penalty kill and key faceoffs."

Jackets adding LW Dalton Smith and RW Petr Straka in the second.

I like Smith, good bloodlines and loves to throw down.

The Associated Press: Jackets claim Ethan Moreau off waivers

Jackets claim Ethan Moreau off waivers
(AP) – 13 hours ago
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Blue Jackets have claimed former Edmonton Oilers left wing Ethan Moreau (moh-ROH') off waivers.

The 34-year-old Moreau, who has a year left on a contract that pays him $1.75 million, had nine goals and nine assists last season. The Oilers could have bought out his contract had Moreau cleared waivers on Wednesday, but now the Blue Jackets will assume his contract.

Moreau had a career-best 20 goals during the 2003-04 season. He has 145 goals and 132 assists in 14 NHL seasons.

FWIW, and probably nobody here really cares......

Sources: Flyers close to signing Zherdev

Two league sources and one Flyers source told the Daily News yesterday that the Flyers and Nikolai Zherdev's agent, Igor Popov, have been talking and appear to be close to a deal. One source said he expects the Flyers to sign the free agent today.

Few expected the Flyers to be in the hunt for Zherdev; they do not normally court players with character question marks. Then again, no one could have prognosticated that Jody Shelley, Sean O'Donnell and Andrej Meszaros would be a part of the Flyers after one week of free agency.
Zherdev's talent remains unquestioned but critics question his work ethic and consistency. Some say he was not a favorite teammate in the Blue Jackets' locker room, a subject that was reported on during his time in Columbus.
