Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

Word on 1460 The Fan today on the drive home was that Boucher said "thanks, but no thanks" to the Jackets.

Guess I understand him wanting to stay in the Habs system if he is indeed their choice for the future.

But it's kind of embarrassing to get turned down by a guy who has one year on the farm. You'd think any minor league coach would be champing at the bit for a shot at the big league.

The CBJ are still the big league, right??

Sucks! I don't think it's embarassing, he's a Quebec guy and probably sees some future potential with the Habs. Who's next? My hope is Dineen.

Actually neither :)

Looks like Scott Arniel will get the job...

Puck-Rakers Blog

After a two-month search that included one public rejection, the Blue Jackets have hired Scott Arniel to be their coach, The Dispatch has learned via multiple NHL sources.
Arniel, who has coached the AHL's Manitoba Moose the last four seasons, will be introduced at a news conference at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Neither Arniel nor Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson would comment when contacted by The Dispatch.
Howson moved quickly yesterday after learning in the early afternoon that Hamilton Bulldogs coach Guy Boucher -- his first choice -- was declining an opportunity to coach the Blue Jackets, saying he was pursuing other opportunities.
The job was offered shortly thereafter to Ariel, who accepted immediately. It took only a few hours to hammer out a contract.
Arniel, 47, has led the Moose to a .617 winning percentage and an average of 45 wins the last four seasons, including a berth in the Calder Cup Finals in 2009. He was a final candidate last spring to coach the Edmonton Oilers, but the Oilers instead hired veteran Pat Quinn.
Arniel played 11 seasons in the NHL with Winnipeg, Buffalo and Boston, and he played 18 pro seasons altogether. He was an assistant coach with Buffalo for three seasons before his hiring in Manitoba. Cont...

The fact that we couldn't hire Boucher stamps the CBJ as just another AHL team IMO.

Not sure why we suck so conclusively, but we do.

I still don't see it that way. If he takes a job outside of the Montreal organization, then I see your point. But, if he's staying out of a sense of loyalty to his organization and city, and a promised future with the Habs... then I get it.

No reason Boucher couldn't return to the Habs when their head job comes open, even if he took the CBJ job. In fact, NHL experience would be a positive for his growth as a coach.

If a minor league coach elects to stay in the minors rather than coming to the big league, then it's a slap in the face of the team that offers him the job. Or else a sign that such team is pretty much a joke.

If the guy wasn't interested in the job he wouldn't have interviewed two separate times for it.

The fact he stayed gives a very clear impression about the status of the CBJ (if not the franchise entirely then at least the roster) as viewed by others in the league

Report: Hamilton Bulldogs coach Guy Boucher agrees to become Tampa Bay Lightning head coach - ESPN

Stamkos + Hedman

Can't say I blame the guy for taking the job with a kid who just scored 51 goals/44 assists in his second season. Tampa Bay also has as many Cups in the last 10 years as the Jackets have playoff appearances.

From what I've read, Arniel was a lot of fans' preferred option. Better long-term coach or something. I have no idea about how good of a coach he is. Boucher would've been nice, but he'll be coaching in Montreal soon enough.

And he has Yzerman as his GM. Don't discount that.

Jackets introduce Arniel as new coach | The Columbus Dispatch

Scott Arniel doesn't care who had the first opportunity to become the new coach of the Blue Jackets. He's just happy the position ultimately became his.
The Jackets introduced Arniel as their coach today at a news conference in Nationwide Arena. The 47-year-old accepted the job yesterday after Guy Boucher rejected the Blue Jackets' offer and took the same post with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
"I don't really care what happened to the other candidates," Arniel said. "Some of them I know and I respect them all...
"The call from (general manager Scott Howson) made my jaw drop. I was just so excited."
Arniel, who played 11 seasons in the NHL, spent the past four years coaching the Manitoba Moose, the top farm club of the Vancouver Canucks. He led the Moose to the AHL playoffs all four seasons and reached the Calder Cup final in 2009.
He said of the four NHL coaching vacancies New Jersey, Atlanta and Tampa Bay being the others Columbus was the most intriguing because the club has "the brightest future." Arniel also interviewed in Atlanta. Cont...
