Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

Pretty exciting preseason game tonight. Klesla took a lot of hits. Couple hard ones too.

Thought Kyle Wilson looked good. Kubalik had a hat trick, his positioning was great for all three goals.

Pens scrubs and grinders looked solid. Some bad defensive play, but when Alex Goligoski is the second best d-man playing on a given night, defensive play isn't going to be great. Thought Wagner (#20) for the Pens was fucking awful. But this team is going to be reeeaaaally tough to play against. So many grinders.

EDIT: Three more things, only one game-related.

1) Officiating was fucking awesome. Best officiated game I've ever seen. Every penalty I saw was called. Now if they could do that in the regular season..

2) Dude who kept getting up and moving around the section I was in and the section beside me, and who was talking shit to the Pens fans around when the CBJ went up by a goal, fuck yourself. You were talking shit to kids. You moved around at least 5 times per period to sit in different seats. Why? You moved around in two different sections. Getting up during play = bad. Don't go anymore.

3) I saw a dude wearing a Michigan jersey at a Jackets game. Almost wanted to punch him in the back of the head so he could get the attention he wanted.

Fun night.

Interesting...we play them again next game right? On the road?

They remind me of the mid-90s 'guins...lots of grinders, and then the superstars at the top of the chart.

Any reports on Sestito or Filatov? Did they play? How did they look? DO you think Filatov will make the club?

Yeah, these two play again next game. Tomorrow I think. Just in Pittsburgh.

Filatov didn't play. Don't think Sestito played too badly, but I was more focused on which Penguins were on the ice. I don't recall Sestito doing anything too costly. Wanted him to fight Rupp.. thought it was going to happen at one point, but Rupp had knocked him down and the refs came and broke it up before Sestito could get up. Rupp was waiting for him.

Speaking of Filatov not playing, there were a couple players I really wanted to see for both sides that didn't play. Not superstars.

John Moore and Filatov for the Jackets, Eric Tangradi and Simon Despres for the Pens. Despres skated with the team before the game, I have no idea why he'd even make the trip if he wasn't going to play.

I do think Filatov will make the club though. He's back in the US to play for the Jackets, not in Syracuse. I think he'll really excell in the new system, too. Jackets should be fun to watch this year. They'll put points on the board.. might let in a lot too, but it should be fun.

I thought there should have been one when Garon got bulled over in front of the goal. Other than that I agree, the officiating was very good.

I lucked out. I went tonight with my 10 year old, and our seats were right next to a couple with a 9 year old boy. That's like free babysitting. My boy won't sit in one spot for 30 minutes, but damn if he didn't sit there and just chat up the kid next to him from the start of the 2nd through the end of the game. A solid hour and he didn't even ask me once to go buy him a foam finger or take him to the restroom to pee. That's NEVER happened before.

I thought they called one on that? I remember what you're talking about, could've sworn it was Goligoski and he got an interference out of it. Maybe not. Either way, very well-officiated game.

i cant see a trade at all...

a guy who has played 37/81/26 games in his last three years. granted the guy is due 9m over the next two years with a cap hit of 5.4m per year. if he goes on re entry waivers at 2.25m plus a small claiming fee he might be worth it. hed still carry a 2.7m cap hit though, granted for about half that teams the cap is irrelevant. the oil have cap space to eat the contract, they are a bigger canadian market, they could ship him to okc, something that isnt likely imo, let him rot in la by not forcing him to report, sending him to europe on loan, or they could put him on reentry. since they have 44m or so committed next year already and most but not all of their team under contract they could eat that, granted id think theyd want the relief seeing as he wont be back and if hes not playing he likely has little/no value the longer the season goes on, id expect reentry waivers, hard to say though...

not at full price...

granted i do not understand the anti commodore, cant fit in theory. granted is he ideal, no. but the system isnt about skating end to end, rather often times a pinching dman, who slides up between the circles can draw a defender, or make him cheat enough to create a numerical advantage. also, this can result in a slow man rush, or as seen by the casual fan-the scramble goal. how many goals do you see right as the power play expires, or as soon as the skater gets back into the defensive zone? a lot. why? b/c teams are moving from their box/diamond back to their regular defense and you have a split second opening in this transition often times to feather/slide a pass and the scoring chance is there. same theory really.

Agreed 100%. Can't pay a guy that much money who probably won't play half the season.

What do you think of the rookies JO? Notably Filatov, Kubalik, Moore, Johansen.. but whoever really. I hear Kubalik's biggest issue is skating. But he didn't have to do much skating the one time I saw him, when he scored a hat trick. Haven't seen any of the other three this preseason.

i think nikita still has the same top six issue of last year, granted he may have physically be able to do it this year.

the rest end up in springfield in the short term, id guess.

kubalik comparison has always been to homer in motown, im not sure hes that good, but that hattie certainly showcased him. hes probably 20-25lbs lighter than his real playing weight. hes shown hell get a little dirty, score some dirty goals, get a few re directions and has good hand/eye.

moore still could use some more good weight. likely ends up in the american skating 20+ mins hopefully in all three aspects (pp, pk, es).

johansen i think goes back to the winterhawks.

i think in some respects the euro trip negatively impacts as i think maybe more likely a cop of coffee before they get sent back (and for the 9 game clock to be used some) if it werent for the euro trip.

I'll be at work, but I'll be checking in on NHL.com. I'm hoping to get 2 points out of the Sweden trip...3 would be bitchin'. 0 or 1...not very good.
