Jackets will take long look at Hainsey

Friday, March 7, 2008 5:33 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Only three of the Blue Jackets' top six defensemen have contracts for next season: Rostislav Klesla, Ole-Kristian Tollefsen and rookie Kris Russell.
That leaves general manager Scott Howson with tough decisions to make regarding the other three, especially when the Blue Jackets will have so much cash to spend this summer and there figures to be such a bumper crop of free-agent defensemen.

Jackets notebook: Sore knee could keep Peca out of the lineup
Novotny would move to No. 2 line if necessary
Friday, March 7, 2008 3:11 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Blue Jackets center Michael Peca left yesterday's practice after about 20 minutes because of lingering soreness in a knee.
He's questionable for the Blue Jackets' game tonight against the Edmonton Oilers in Nationwide Arena.
"It was a little bit tender," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "So we'll see where he's at in practice" today.

Reports in The Dispatch of Adam Foote's conduct before his deadline-day trade to Colorado started a furious war of words on some Internet message boards, particularly one on HFboards.com that had more than 9,400 page views and 250 posts as of yesterday.
The thread, titled "Columbus Dispatch: Foote threatened to be bad teammate," even lured in a Canadian hockey columnist, who fielded a call from Foote's agent and later wrote a stirring defense of the former Blue Jackets captain on his blog. In the process of defending his blog report from angry comments by Jackets fans, the columnist called Dispatch reports "garbage," a remark he somewhat amended in a later post by referring to the newspaper's hockey writers as "good reporters."

Oilers 2, Blue Jackets 1 (OT): Tease, then defeat
Fritsche's goal in last second ties it, but Oilers win in overtime
Saturday, March 8, 2008 3:09 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DSPATCH

It wasn't until the final second of regulation last night, with goaltender Pascal Leclaire pulled and both defensemen pinched down low, that the Blue Jackets managed a goal.
It wasn't an act of God, just an act of desperation.

Michael Arace commentary: Shortcomings on the ice a small price to pay on a perfect night for hockey

The Oilers' Marty Reasoner and the Blue Jackets' David Vyborny scrap for the puck.

Last night, after the first period of the Blue Jackets-Edmonton Oilers game, a taped message came on the Jumbotron in Nationwide Arena. There appeared Rick Nash, with a haircut, thanking the fans "for coming out in a huge snowstorm." The Edmonton writers in the neighboring booth smiled at that. Snowstorm hugeness is a relative thing.
Most commuters hit the road early, and by the time the doors to the arena were unlocked, Downtown was relatively deserted. But there was life in the Arena District. More than 14,000 tickets were sold and about 8,000 fans made their way into the building. Is that a weak crowd -- or a strong one, given the circumstances? Really, it doesn't matter.

The Blue Jackets' Dan Fritsche, right, scores with .8 of a second left in regulation.

Nobody in the Blue Jackets' locker room smiles more than goaltender Pascal Leclaire.
He wakes up happy, his disposition perpetually set on sunny. This past week, however, grins and timely saves have been in short supply.
Edmonton forward Andrew Cogliano beat Leclaire with a wrist shot between the pads at 1:53 of overtime to give the Oilers a 2-1 victory last night in Nationwide Arena.

Bob Hunter commentary: Feeble offense keeps Blue Jackets out of playoffs

Coach Ken Hitchcock would never say so publicly, but he knows better than the rest of us. He has essentially been trying to win a gunfight with a pocket knife.
It was a valiant effort -- the Alamo's less than 200 brave souls vs. Santa Anna's 2,000 is the image that springs to mind -- but realistically, the Blue Jackets' playoff chase is over. They aren't going to make up a seven-point deficit in 13 games, especially when there are three teams between them and the final playoff spot. So it's time to accept the inevitable, put away the anger over Adam Foote's reported betrayal, management's inability to land playmaking center Brad Richards and ownership's unwillingness to spend a bazillion dollars on free agents before the season and move on.

Jackets' quest for top center just got easier

Sunday, March 9, 2008 4:40 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DSPATCH

When Blue Jackets captain Adam Foote walked out on his teammates at the trade deadline in February, there was great concern in Nationwide Arena that the season would unravel.
Now, nearly two weeks later, those short-term fears have been assuaged.

Jackets notebook: Hejda, Klesla clicking together on defense

Sunday, March 9, 2008 4:26 AM
By Tom Reed

The Columbus Dispatch

Blue Jackets defenseman Jan Hejda had his doubts about the potential pairing.
Partner-to-be Rostislav Klesla had his worries, as well.
The Czechs were compatible enough off the ice but working in tandem during the preseason enjoyed little success.
"We just weren't on the same page," Klesla said. "So when they put us back together I didn't know how it would go."

Most CBJ fans wasnt a sniff of the playoffs?? We have a great fan base, incrediable arena/atmosphere, and excellent local TV & radio support. Every year, same story, same apologies and the same assurance this team is moving in the right direction. Ater seeing Brad Richards score 5 points in his Dallas debut, why did we not go after him, Whatever the cost!!

Teams that want to progress to the playoffs should be picking up major talent like this guy. We have PLENTY of cap room. No excuse, the Jackets totally screwed this one up.
