Rick Nash, the Columbus Blue Jackets' all-time leader in goals, was named the team's captain on Wednesday.
Nash, 23, has spent his entire career in Columbus after the Blue Jackets took him with the first pick in the 2002 draft.
In 351 games with Columbus, the Ontario native has recorded 151 goals and 114 assists for 265 points. He ranks second on the team's all-time list in scoring and assists and is fourth in games played.
Nash has played in three straight All-Star games and in the 2003 was a finalist for the Calder Trophy, which is awarded to the league's top rookie.

Rick Nash said he might relate to the Blue Jackets' younger players better than an older captain would.

Coach Ken Hitchcock knew Rick Nash wanted to be the next captain of the Blue Jackets.
He had read Nash's comments and talked to others within the organization who believed the left winger was ready.
Still, Hitchcock needed to hear it for himself. On Sunday night, after the Jackets' 5-3 win over Tampa Bay, he summoned Nash to his office.

Yesterday morning, in an interview area on the ground level of Nationwide Arena, before a small throng of local media, Rick Nash pulled on a No. 61 Blue Jackets jersey with the captain's "C" stitched on the left chest, just above the heart.
As public ceremony, it was low-key. As a significant moment in franchise history, it was a watershed. The future is much brighter than the past, beginning now. The captaincy is important, and now it's homegrown.

Jackets notebook: Comeback for Leclaire earns award nomination

Thursday, March 13, 2008 3:23 AM
By Tom Reed and Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Pascal Leclaire's career once seemed on the verge of being run aground by injuries.
But this season, Leclaire, the Blue Jackets' No. 8 overall draft pick in 2001, has stayed mostly healthy and has emerged as one of the NHL's top goaltenders.
That perseverance is why Leclaire, 25, is the Blue Jackets' nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, given annually to the NHL player who "best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to ice hockey."

Blue Jackets notebook: Giving Peca an 'A' could be letter of club's intent

Friday, March 14, 2008 3:10 AM
By Tom Reed

The Columbus Dispatch

The Blue Jackets handed out two letters Wednesday in Nationwide Arena.
One caused quite the fuss; the other drew scant mention.
On a day the Jackets bestowed the captain's "C" on left winger Rick Nash, they also named center Michael Peca an alternate captain.
Awarding Peca, an unrestricted free agent, an "A" with just 12 games remaining is an intriguing move, one that raises an obvious question: Does it mean the team plans to re-sign him?

Due to make his 52nd appearance of the season tonight, Blue Jackets goalie Pascal Leclaire leaves no doubts about his durability.

At this time last season, Blue Jackets goaltender Pascal Leclaire needed crutches to make his way around Nationwide Arena.
For the Blue Jackets, the sight of their franchise goaltender hobbling around was troubling but hardly new. After two of his past three pro seasons were essentially wiped out by injury, there was concern that Leclaire's potential might never be realized.
"The feeling is, after you've spent a couple of seasons when you're injured all the time, you wonder if you're ever going to be healthy," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "You wonder if they're ever going to go an entire season healthy.

We just got home after dropping J and D off.

Fun times

Too bad the Wings couldn't pull it out, but after the first couple periods I was shocked it wasn't 6-1 so I'll take it and hope they don't pull that crap in the playoffs (they will)

Just remember, John Holmes has a school record in pole vaulting

Jackie says hi BTW and it was nice to meet you two.

Blue Jackets goalie Fredrik Norrena prepares to stop a shot by Red Wings defenseman Brian Rafalski in the first period.

At 2:55 p.m. yesterday, as a sold-out Nationwide Arena was beginning to pulse, Blue Jackets goaltender Pascal Leclaire sat on a training table in the far reaches of the dressing room, fielding "neurological test" questions from one of the team doctors.
Leclaire was supposed to start against the Detroit Red Wings, but a puck fired off his mask by teammate Fredrik Modin in warm-ups left Leclaire dazed, confused and claiming he was Gump Worsley.
