CBJ notebook: Bronchitis waylays a number of Jackets

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Blue Jackets hoped to come back from the All-Star Game break fully healthy, ready to make a playoff charge.
It hasn't worked out that way, on either front.
The Jackets have lost a season-high three straight heading into tonight's game against the Washington Capitals.
And they're hardly healthy.
Center Sergei Fedorov (concussion) and left winger Fredrik Modin (torn hamstring) are improving daily, coach Ken Hitchcock said, but a wave of bronchitis has swept through the dressing room.

The Blue Jackets' David Vyborny gets the worst of a collision with the Capitals' Shaone Morrisonn.

As the pile of humanity began to untangle inside the Blue Jackets' goal, defenseman Jan Hejda looked at goaltender Pascal Leclaire, who was pinned awkwardly amid the twine and posts.
"I wanted to check and make sure he was still alive," Hejda said, only half kidding.
Leclaire, the driving force behind the Blue Jackets' resurgence this season, suffered a sprained neck with 4:38 left in the second period and needed help skating to the dressing room.

Bob Hunter commentary: Injury to Leclaire threatens team's playoff ambitions

Wednesday, February 6, 2008 3:28 AM
By Bob Hunter

A season can change in a blink of an eye, or in this case, a crash into a goaltender.
A speeding bullet called Quintin Laing rammed defenseman Jan Hejda into Blue Jackets goalie Pascal Leclaire, whose neck hit the goal post the way a runaway car hits a tree. Depending upon how long Leclaire is out, that could have been the most important play of the season.
With eight shutouts, Leclaire has been a major reason why the Jackets are still in the NHL playoff hunt. It's not impossible for them to stay in it without him, but it gets much, much harder. In case you have noticed, and you haven't been watching if you haven't noticed, the Jackets' margin for error is as thin as a piece of typing paper.

The Blue Jackets' Jiri Novotny, right, shadows Alex Ovechkin of the Capitals. Ovechkin scored two goals, including the winner.

Only one group of players slowed irrepressible Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin last night in Nationwide Arena.
Unfortunately for Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock, he couldn't suit up members of the Findlay High School hockey team. The plucky Trojans stood behind a metal barricade in the arena bowels and persuaded Ovechkin to sign autographs for several minutes after the Capitals' 4-3 overtime victory.

The Columbus Dispatch

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock walked out of Jobing.com Arena yesterday and saw a young face that momentarily made him forget about his team's four-game losing streak.
It belonged to 19-year-old goaltending prospect Steve Mason, who had just arrived in town with his bright blue equipment bag slung over a shoulder.

Jason Chimera, who is in the final year of a two-year contract, could have become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

When the talks began in December, Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson and Allan Walsh, agent for left winger Jason Chimera, were discussing a three-year contract.
The more they talked, the clearer it became -- three years just wasn't enough.
"Jason was clear to me from the start that he wanted his long-term hockey future to be in Columbus," Walsh said.
