The Blue Jackets' David Vyborny, who recorded his 300th career point in his 500th game, skates between Niklas Kornwall, left, and Pavel Datsyuk of the Red Wings in the first period.

A season ago, Michael Peca says he begged the Toronto Maple Leafs' coaching staff to include him in shootout lineups.

The Leafs response? Thanks for your interest, now please be seated.
"I pleaded with them and it never stuck," Peca said. "We continued to go with guys who were 0-9 on the season."
As last night's shootout loomed, Peca skated to the Blue Jackets bench to remind coaches he had qualified for a chance through the team's practice tournaments they randomly conduct.

Jared Boll of the Blue Jackets trades punches with Aaron Downey of the Red Wings in a second-period fight. Both received five-minute penalties.

With a snap of Nikolai Zherdev's wrists, the Blue Jackets ended their shootout struggles, beat the Detroit Red Wings and sent a large, loud crowd out of Nationwide Arena with the echo of a cannon blast ringing in its ears last night.

Zherdev, who had scored an earlier goal, ended a night of intense drama with a shootout goal that gave the Blue Jackets a 3-2 win over the Red Wings.

Columbus is right there. They need another scorer to even out the lines a bit, but a lot of the right pieces are falling into place.

Getting Peca back is very nice. Solid defensively, and allows for all of the centers to be dropped down a line. A healthy Modin would be nice, too.

They can't be 2nd. The highest a non-division leader can be is 4th.....

But in terms of points, yes, you are correct

:tibor:

:p

EDIT - Now in a four-way tie for 2nd (most points!) in the conference with 26. Phoenix has 22 and they're in 13th.

A healthy Modin would help too, but he needs someone to create his shots for him (like St. Louis and Lecavlier would set him up for in Tampa). The CBJ don't have that quite yet.

Hell more like a 6-way tie at 26 with 2 more teams with 25 points on the outside looking in.

I'll say it right now, the West teams will end up kicking the crap out of each other both in the regular season and in the playoffs.

The Playoffs should be fun to watch. Outside of whomever plays Detroit in the first round (assuming it isn't Chicago or Columbus), all of the other series should be very competitive and closely played.

Blue Jackets: First extended trip will be a barometer

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

EDMONTON, Alberta -- When the Blue Jackets landed at approximately 7 p.m. local time yesterday, the temperature in this central Alberta oil town was minus-15 degrees.
That's Celsius, of course. In Fahrenheit, that's 5 degrees. By any measure, that's cold.
Parking meters double as oil-pan heaters in this city, where the winter sun sets early, spit bounces, and one can freeze to death waiting for a cab.

There's obviously no one of Vincent Lecavalier (best name in sports!) or St. Louis, but I think the team could use a guy who can bury a shot from the slot. The team does a pretty decent job with energy goals and garbage goals, but a guy who can plant himself in the slot or in front of the goal is one of the things the team has been missing.

On to Edmonton tonight. With Ryan Smyth having moved on from Edmonton, Columbus might actually have a chance against the Oilers. That guy brutalized the CBJ.

I challenge your "best name in sports" Vincent Lecavalier and submit that "Night Train Lane " is better

I'll stand by Vincent Lecavalier on the fact that it's a given name rather than a nickname. Night Train Lane is certainly more of a bad-ass name, but Lecavalier is a lot flashier.

Jan Hejda of the Blue Jackets collides with Dustin Penner of the Oilers near the boards in the first period.

EDMONTON, Alberta -- In one sense, the Blue Jackets stalked out of Rexall Place last night feeling dejected.
The Jackets were brutal on special teams, and it cost them in a 3-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers.
In another sense, the Blue Jackets felt pretty lucky.

THE COLUMBUS DISPTACH

EDMONTON, Alberta -- In 1982, then-Edmonton Oilers owner Peter Pocklington and his wife were kidnapped at gun point and held hostage for about an hour.
Pocklington owned a soccer club at the time, too. During the tense standoff, one of his soccer players, while being interviewed by the media, was informed that Pocklington's captors wanted $1 million and a ticket on the next flight out of Edmonton.

Michael Arace commentary: Improved Jackets rate as real-deal contenders

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Blue Jackets last night began a three-game swing through Alberta and British Columbia. They will carry themselves well, not only on this trip, but also for the remainder of the season. They are legitimate playoff contenders for the first time. The plan is coming together.
That much was clear Saturday night, when the Jackets beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 before a near-capacity crowd in Nationwide Arena. It was the Jackets' first shootout victory of the season, it came against the Wings, and the building was alive with bloodlust. But the key aspect of the game was not how it felt, but how it looked.
