Kris Russell shoots while the Panthers' Ville Peltonen tries to block the shot.
The flip side to Pascal Leclaire's red-hot start to the season -- a .953 save percentage in October -- was that, sooner or later, the numbers were bound to level off.
NHL goalies don't stop 95.3 percent of the pucks fired their direction during the course of a season, just like major-league batters don't hit .450 for very long.

A year ago yesterday, Ken Hitchcock was hired to coach the Blue Jackets. He inherited a team that missed the playoffs in each of its five seasons and was prematurely primed for another miss. It was a team that had the worst winning percentage in the NHL, and one of the worst in professional sports. That is not an accident. It is a track record.
Hitchcock ambled in with a smirk-smile on his face and a massive monkey wrench in his belt. The cast-iron wrench is a good tool. It can twist a nut. It works as a hammer or a back scratcher. Sometimes, it's handy just for show.

Ken Hitchcock got to hoist the Stanley Cup as coach of the Dallas Stars in 1999, but "that stuff is old news" in these parts.
The Blue Jackets introduced Ken Hitchcock as their coach a year ago today, but his appreciation for central Ohio sports fans was born on Nov. 18, 2000.
He stood on the Ohio Stadium sideline that day, thanks to a friend with the right connections, and watched the first half of the Ohio State-Michigan game.

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- To commemorate Ken Hitchcock's first anniversary as coach, the Blue Jackets gave him the traditional gift of paper.
Sandpaper, that is.
The Blue Jackets got their grit back yesterday with a resounding 4-0 win over the Minnesota Wild in front of a sellout crowd of 18,568 in the Xcel Energy Center.
After a poor showing Wednesday in a 5-2 loss to the Florida Panthers, the Blue Jackets returned to the style of play Hitchcock covets -- aggressive, strong on the puck and opportunistic.

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The only shutout Blue Jackets goaltender Pascal Leclaire expected to post yesterday was in the "minutes played" column.
Leclaire was scheduled to back up Fredrik Norrena against the Minnesota Wild in the Xcel Energy Center. When Norrena took ill, however, Leclaire took charge in a 4-0 victory for the Blue Jackets.

Man, oh man....Talk about parity. Entering yesterday, the Jackets were tied for tenth in the Western conference. Right now, they are in second, but could be back down to a tie for 5th by the end of the evening.
Nice win tonight, boys!
