The Blackhawks' Jim Vandermeer, left, and the Blue Jackets' Rick Nash trade punches after the game.

One minute into the second period last night, Blue Jackets defenseman Adam Foote fired a shot from the point that ticked off the stick of center Sergei Fedorov and whizzed past Chicago goaltender Patrick Lalime.
With one little flick of the wrist -- with one sliver of wood about three inches above his blade -- Fedorov lifted the puck over Lalime, lifted the mood in Nationwide Arena and lifted the spirits of a Blue Jackets club that was knee-deep in self-doubt.

Michael Arace commentary: Nash uses fists to show his heart

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Blue Jackets, 0-3-1 in the past four games, put a 4-2 lashing on the Chicago Blackhawks last night in Nationwide Arena. The building was alive all night and, in the end, it bellowed with a primal yaw.
As the clock wound down in the third period, Jackets fans were seen throwing haymakers at Blackhawks fans in section 102.

Jackets notebook: Hejda solidifies defensive effort
Soft-spoken Czech knows how to limit opponents' top line

The Blackhawks' Dustin Byfuglien, left, tries to block a shot by the Blue Jackets' Manny Malhotra.

Little was known about defenseman Jan Hejda before he arrived in Columbus this fall, not even by his coach.
What greeted Ken Hitchcock at training camp was a soft-spoken Czech with a good frame and bad marriage of consonants and vowels. "Hejda was (general manager) Scott Howson's guy in Edmonton," Hitchcock said. "I wasn't really that aware of him."
In the first 18 games, Hejda certainly has made an impression on his teammates and coaching staff. Paired with captain Adam Foote, Hejda is developing into a shutdown defenseman on an offensively challenged team.

From this article:

"A female supporter of the Blackhawks, a woman with bluish-green hair, was the one who touched off the altercation, according to both Chicago and Columbus fans. Apparently, she did it not just with words, but with physical action. It escalated. A Chicago man jumped up and started throwing punches. Five people were removed from the stands. I don't know this for sure, but it was said the Columbus contingent won the fight."

Looks like I was wrong in my perception of who was instigating. I remember seeing the chick with green hair earlier on the video board. The Hawks fan she was with gave the camera the bird. Classy folks there. :slappy:

possible late fight instigation, typically given to the team who is losing automatic one game and 10k fine to the coach. dont see it happening vandemeer might get it doubt nash will, i didnt see much of that fight i was watching rock em sock em robots in the stands? anyone else catch that?

I wasn't there, so I missed the fun stuff in the stands. That kind of reminds me of the first Browns - Ravens game in Cleveland in 1999. Fun times

As for a possible suspension, I don't think either of them should get it, but then again I have absolutely no faith in Bettman getting anything right at this point.

also you had players leave the bench? will they get slammed for that? then never left the "bench area" so i doubt it but who knows

I don't think there is a rule for that if they didn't get involved in the fight, which they didn't really....

At least the NHL punishments are handled by Colin Campbell and not Betteman. I actually think this sets up the next meeting between these 2 very nicely. I would like to see Shelley and Vandermeer go at it one more time.

If you think Bettman doesn't apply certain amounts of pressure on situations to make them go to his liking you're dreaming.

Bettman is about the only person in the league that thinks fighting needs to go.

if you leave the bench/bench area you are subject to suspension. after rewatching it, im not worried. it corresponded with the end of the game, nothing else occurred, should be fine.

nasher fighting is about the most dumb ass thing, though im glad deep down he gets tangled up and stands up for himself. nash and vandemeer made their points, both took a couple of swings nothing big. actually in my view a classy move by vandemeer not to draw it out and try and make any homerun punches. he wasnt gonna go in and try knock his head off, the result would have been somebody against kane the next go around and as much as i like that kid he couldnt beat up a third grade girl who is twice his size.

nice win and i believe we have begun to see the coming out of the next captain of the lady bugs

He may think it needs to go and away goes his entire base of fans. Not in the US but up north. Hell fighting is the way those kids are brought up. I can definitely assure you I am no way naive enough to think that Gary Betteman doesn't whine and cry to Campbell about issues he deems not "good for our league". Still, someone with some common sense still has significant input to the decision.

On another note Nash will be captain next season. Just my 2 cents, and only that.

Bettman is an NBA wannabe and David Stern essentially pushed him on the board of governors. Hell look at the state of the game today, do you think the guy makes any decisions with the good of the game in mind?

That was pretty much inevitable though....

well, when you dominate an entire period like the CBJ did in the 1st against St. Louis, you have to put one home.

Unfortunately that didn't happen and even middle of the road teams like St. Louis can end up winning if they get a goal late in a period like that.
