What has made college football unique is that the National Champion is given to the team with the best body of work over the course of the entire season.

It's subjective, it's not always cut and dry, it's not always pretty. But it is interesting, it is engaging, it is passionate.

The problem with a playoff is the law of unintended consequences. As often as not, some jackleg 9-3 team is going to back their way into the playoff, get hot and win over an undefeated team in the Championship game.

No one denies that it would be exciting. It would be tremendous.

But I deny that they would be the National Champion. They haven't proven themselves to be the best team over the course of the entire season. They just got hot at the right time.

What they would be is a Tournament Champion.

Therein lies the difference.

It abandons all that is right and good about College Football in favor of satisfying some folks discomfort of a little ambiguity.

It abandons any relative merit of an outstanding regular season.

It's a dumb idea for College Football. College Football is unique in the world of sports. We should embrace that rather than rush to make it just like every other sport. It is one of the things that makes College Football the Best Sport On The Planet?.
This.

That's fine. Then lets have a playoff to see if these mid-majors are really a flash in the pan for 1 game, or can get up for 2 or 3 games against quality opponents.
that's humorous, because one of the main reasons boise does not schedule 2 to 3 quality opponents back to back (or arguably overall) is because of money.

Many up and coming programs have made the effort and sacrifices to bring in quality competition and gain respect. Boise state would rather hold out for lucrative money deals and home games at their uncompetitive and money losing facilities.

Why be courageous when you can schedule a flawed bcs squad or two, like msu and georgia?

Then don't claim any, ANY team as the national champ. If you don't want a playoff then don't claim a national champion. Tell me any other major sport in college or pro that determines a champion without some sort of playoff system. Why is college football so special? M O N E Y. That's it. There is no rational reason to not want a playoff.
then go complain to boise's ad for his greed.

Anyone else have a visual of Joe jumping around his basement, fistpumping, and screaming at the monitor after every post?

Throw in a couple of Ric Flair 'wooos' and you have yourself a man convinced with his logic.

Wooo.

You're on the wrong side of the argument!

... the current system says one team is the best.

No, it does not. It crowns one team National Champion. Not at all the same thing.

Please click this link....please. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/champion

What's your answer now chump?
My answer is that the word "best" nowhere appears in any of the entries for "champion."

It's kind of too bad this fuckwit has been banned. Debates with him are like rock-climbing matches with a paraplegic.

methinks that this thread deserves a thread tag of "The Situation".

But to get back off topic, I wouldn't mind a playoff system. I think I would like it actually. But I also don't mind the current system, and rather like it as well actually. So my point is, whether it happens or not, some people will be happy and some people will not. I get the arguments for both sides. A playoff doesn't necessarily crown a champion while the BCS system isn't necessarily fair to Regular Joe's horny toads. But let's be honest with ourselves with one thing. A playoff in college football would be [censored]ing exhilarating, and whether it SHOULD happen or not, the only thing that is actually stopping it from happening is money.

Wooo!

After I was called a number of things by said moron, I had a number of other visuals that my mind was conjuring up. Orrin Hatch would be unhappy with me if I shared them.

Being a Scotch Romanian in Provo, Utah must give you some bragging rights about something, but I guess conversational skills wouldn't be part of that.

If only MufflerDragon hadn't baited him so by bringing logic into the conversation, he might have revealed the wisdom of the ages. :slappy:

If you don't want a playoff then don't claim a national champion.

Coming out of a sports background that uses double elimination brackets to lessen impact of imprecise seeding & provide a larger body to help minimize the effects of a single slip up you can take your flawed single elimination tournament and shove it.

If you don't want a full 120 team round robin best of seven double elimination tournament then don't claim a national champion.

Tell me any other major sport in college or pro that determines a champion without some sort of playoff system. Why is college football so special?

College football is by far the most popular amateur sport in the nation (and more popular than several professional sports).

Therefore it must be 'fixed' by making it conform more closely to other less popular events.

Oh the sweet jello flavored irony.
