It's subjective, it's not always cut and dry, it's not always pretty. But it is interesting, it is engaging, it is passionate.
The problem with a playoff is the law of unintended consequences. As often as not, some jackleg 9-3 team is going to back their way into the playoff, get hot and win over an undefeated team in the Championship game.
No one denies that it would be exciting. It would be tremendous.
But I deny that they would be the National Champion. They haven't proven themselves to be the best team over the course of the entire season. They just got hot at the right time.
What they would be is a Tournament Champion.
Therein lies the difference.
It abandons all that is right and good about College Football in favor of satisfying some folks discomfort of a little ambiguity.
It abandons any relative merit of an outstanding regular season.
It's a dumb idea for College Football. College Football is unique in the world of sports. We should embrace that rather than rush to make it just like every other sport. It is one of the things that makes College Football the Best Sport On The Planet?.
