Coaching changes: coaches hired and fired, comings and goings

I don't think he flamed out at Cal - he was fantastic. Passed up a lot of big time jobs....very, very tough place to coach. Getting kids into Cal is hard enough, but you're going up against schools that have 10x the facilities, fans that show up, boosters that care, etc.

He went to 7 straight bowls, since 1950 they've had 3 10 win seasons and he's been behind 2 of them. The guy is legit one of the best offensive minds of our era....but hiring one of their own alum, who has coached there before, this hire was a grand slam move for them.

Having lived in Central Cal before I can assure you, getting anyone who is functionally literate to come to Fresno is an achievement alone, so someone like Jeff is special.

And he's already gotten Haener to return it looks like, sorry Washington.

I agree. I remember a few years back when Sonny Dykes coached there. Started off strong but only lasted 3 years. He's not an elite coach by any means, but I think he's very solid. Did well enough at SMU for a few years afterward that TCU hired him to replace Patterson. He was good at LA Tech before he went to Cal too. Suggests to me that it's tough it is to win at Cal.

Steve Mariucci had one 6-6 season at Cal, and parlayed it into the 49ers head coaching job. That was considered a huge success back in 1996.

Good chronology on coaching changes and big new contracts to keep their current coach.

I don't remember this many big time schools changing head coaches (even before the season is over) before.

The 2 biggest shockers has to be Riley to USC and Kelly to LSU.

I'll concede the latter points, but Cal makes the same compromises that every other P5 school makes. There might be a few kids that they'll pass on that end up at Arizona State or Wazzu, but don't think there aren't a ton of kids with sub-1000 SAT scores on that football team.

Jumping into this thread for first time.
Not sure it is relevant.

But I read a theory on Stanfords recent collapse.
David Shaw was once considered a top coach deserving of an NFL gig.

Theory is they won't budge and consider an early admission process.
With kids deciding earlier their pool of potential recruits has shrunk.

David Shaw's last 3 years at Stanford (4-8, 4-2, 3-9). He still has an overall record at Stanford of 93-45. He did finish ranked in the top 20 6 of his first 7 years there. I wonder how many years he has on his current contract. With college football coaches "it's the past is the past, what have you done for me lately"?

Marshawn Lynch got into Cal under Tedford and I legitimately don't believe he can speak complete sentences.

Let's pump the brakes a bit on the academic requirements for scholarship athletes at Berkeley.

Eh, Marshawn isn't the example I'd throw out there. He plays a part in most public spots, but in any interviews you get to see of him, he is very articulate and thoughtful.

If they can get a kid talented enough I'd imagine like any school they'll find a way to get him in, the 5* QB or high 4*....but that's not what makes a program. It's the 3* kids, and they aren't good enough to bend the rules on, so they have much fewer options in that regard. When you have a stud QB, you can dance that delicate line....when you swing and miss on them, the house of cards falls pretty quick.
