Coaching changes: coaches hired and fired, comings and goings

Sooner or later, someone is going to give Mike Leach a job and all the rest of the teams in that conference are going to be sorry.

You put him in the right job, and he'd win big.

He's kind of crazy, but it's an entertaining kind of crazy.

Pitt is in a real mess, but what about Frank Solich? He coached at Nebraska, he's actually winning at Ohio, and he's from Johnstown, PA.

As someone stated earlier, I really think Rodriguez would be a good hire again in the Big East. As embarrassing as the Big 10 has looked this bowl season, it's still significantly better than the Big East. His recruiting techniques work in that conference (over-recruiting offensive players/slot dots/3* recruits, etc.)

It'd add some spice to the WVU/Pitt game..which is always nice :ohwell:

I really think Rodriguez will bounce back once he gets out of the Big 10 and into a smaller role/weaker conference.

Edit* Although I think Pitt would be smart to hire Rodriguez if he's available, they won't. Pitt cannot afford the bad PR a second time though after this domestic assault case. I'd look for them to hire a guy with a pristine track record to avoid any further embarrassment. That isn't D-Rod...

They pushed the Fridge out the door for Randy Edsall? Hard to believe that was their first choice.

He wasn't. Leach was #1 but he was either not willing to drop the lawsuit against ESPN (which probably caused ESPN to tell UM to drop him from the list of candidates) or Leach has a line on another opportunity coming up soon.

This new AD at Maryland thought he could flash the UnderArmour brand name and get his way with ESPN to hire Leach. But ESPN probably told him that if UM hires Leach with whom they're locked in a legal battle with, ESPN will not broadcast any UM games or interview any UM coaches or players. Leach may be good but he's not worth that much of a hassle.

Somebody answer me this.

Why hasn't Jim Heacock gotten a head coaching job yet?

Is he waiting for Tressel to retire?

I don't think it's appealing to him. He isn't a "in-front of the cameras" type guy. Mickey Andrews was the same type of way...

Both are/were great at what they do, but would rather be behind the scenes concentrating on one thing....

And Heacock won't be the successor to Tressel...and I don't think Heacock would ever try and position himself for it either.

He's not really the head coaching type. He's happy scheming the defense and coaching up the DL, which he has been doing since the mid 90s at OSU (Vrabel).

He is also 62.

Looks like Edsall is leaving UConn for Maryland.

Kind of odd. Seems like a lateral move to me.

Yeah, seems like taking UConn from nowhere to a BCS bowl would help him land a better job.

Something just sounds weird about going BCS bowling and then accepting a job at Maryland.

Coaching in the Big10 in a couple years will be a huge step up

He will likely retire at that point anyway. He'll be about 67-72 by then.

Luke Fickell (who Heacock coached in the 90s) will likely take over DC duties, if he hasn't taken another position by then.

PoSU assistant Tom Bradley rumored to be the front runner for the Pitt job.

Stanford requests permission to speak with Boise's Chris Peterson.

Edsall made $1.6M this season at UConn; earlier reports said Maryland was looking to throw as much as $3.5M of their Under Armour money at a new coach. Seems like a pretty lateral move in terms of team prestige, but it sounds like he's getting a lot more money at his new job.

I believe UM is also the school closest to where Edsall is from in southern PA and he grew up going to their games.

A little too much conspiracy theory for me.

FWIW he is a local.

It's official: Chris Petersen wants no part of stronger competition or higher expectations.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/20....peterson.boise.state.ap/index.html?eref=sihp

BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- Chris Petersen says he wants to continue his highly successful run at Boise State.
The Broncos coach squelched chatter linking him to the opening at Stanford, saying Monday he has no interest in other jobs. The Cardinal are looking for a coach after Jim Harbaugh took over the NFL's San Francisco 49ers last week.
Petersen also filled two openings on his staff Monday, including bringing back Brent Pease to coordinate the Broncos' high-scoring offense. Last month, Pease accepted the same job at Indiana, but was lured back after former Broncos offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin moved on to Texas.

Stanford would've been PERFECT. All of the resources you could ask for, very little of the expectations and pressure that come with an opportunity like that.
