Ralph Freigen out at Maryland as Mike Leach rumors circulate.

Reports: Friedgen will accept buyout

Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen will accept a buyout and not return for the 2011 season, according to multiple reports.
Friedgen was named the 2010 ACC Coach of the Year after leading Maryland to an 8-4 record.
Friedgen, 63, first learned of athletic director Kevin Anderson's intentions to buy him out early this week, according to InsideMDSports.com.
The statement sparked reports that Anderson is going to ask the 63-year-old coach to retire and take a buyout. Friedgen is slated to be paid $2 million next season.
According to reports, former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach is a possibility to replace Friedgen.

I think one of the Assistants has a Coach In Waiting clause like Muschamp had.

Well, they did...

Vanderbilt hires Maryland OC, coach-in-waiting Franklin

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Vanderbilt's commitment to excellence and academics and the chance to coach in the Southeastern Conference helped school officials lure James Franklin away from Maryland to become the Commodores' new coach.
Franklin, the offensive coordinator who was in line to succeed Maryland head coach Ralph Friedgen, was introduced Friday as Vanderbilt's third head coach this season.
"It was obvious to me right away that this place could be something really special," Franklin said. "It was really about the people. I was blown away by the people. Really, I was in a situation where I didn't really have to take a job. I had a pretty good situation. It was going to take something really special to get me to jump on board."

Rick Reilly's column of the 15th points out some of the finer points of a coach I hope finds a new job. This guy is funny, funny, funny! Makes Mike Leach seem like Leonid Brezhnev.

Just a few Greenisms from over the years:
"I'm a perfectionist. I expect Jennifer Lopez to know how to cook."

After a close loss ... "It's kinda like watching your mother in law go off a cliff in your brand new Cadillac. You got mixed feelings."

"I got a short memory, just like when I was in the third grade. Two of the best years of my life."

"The game is going to come down to playing football. We've got to play football. We're not trying to split the atom."

"We want to play a full 60 minutes. One thing is for sure, the game will last at least 60 minutes."

"There were some long faces and there were some lower lips sticking out. But we did not call the undertaker and tell him to order a 50-gallon drum of embalming fluid."

"We played two games that were very winnable. Unfortunately, they were very losable."

"It was a team effort. Everybody contributed with poor play."

Stewart Mandel makes an alarming discovery: new coaches are younger than old coaches!

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/20...g.maryland.west.virginia/index.html?eref=sihp

Generally speaking, there's only one thing a head coach must do to keep his job: win. But if the 2010-11 coaching carousel has taught us anything, it's that some athletic directors are adding a caveat: win, and don't be old.

My favorite bit is when he mentions that Colorado went young by hiring 45-year-old Embree to replace 50-year-old Hawkins. Ageists!
