Coach Bill Conley (official thread)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but after a quick googling, I could only find that Conley coached at OSU for 17 years. He left in 2004, so that would put his first year at OSU as 1986. Tressel had already moved onto YSU by then, so how could Conley be the unnamed source in the SI piece (of shit).

Uh...wut? lol

I'm assuming the reason the thread was bumped is because Conley's name is being floated around as the person who claimed that Tressel was rigging raffles at OSU summer football camps in the '80's.

I assumed it was because he was coming back. One...or both of us is wrong.

I had also read some rumors in regards to Conley being a major source in the SI piece. I've seen a few people say it's more than likely, and someone who says there isn't a chance in hell.

Was wondering if OH10 had seen it confirmed...

Ex-OSU coach works on building Ohio Dominican football program

CANTON TWP. ?

Bill Conley felt kind of spoiled after spending 15 years as an assistant football coach and recruiting coordinator at Ohio State.

Conley worked under head coaches Earle Bruce, John Cooper and Jim Tressel. He helped develop All-Americans and future NFL players such as Cris Carter, Pepper Johnson, Chris Spielman and Mike Vrabel. He was part of the 2002 national championship team.

Veteran coaches always have a burning desire to become head coaches. When Ohio Dominican called Conley two years ago to ask him if he wanted to become the Panthers? head coach, he wasn?t in a rush to say yes.

?I loved coaching at Ohio State all those years,? Conley told the Pro Football Hall of Fame Luncheon Club on Monday. ?... I said ?I?m used to Division I, and you look at the situation then, Ohio Dominican was an NAIA school. They said ?No, no. We?re jumping to Division II.?

?When you jump a division, that?s not a very quick start in terms of success. It takes about five or six years to get a winning program going.?

Conley wanted to become a head coach. He wanted a challenge. After working as ESPN?s recruiting analyst, having a full-time job in Columbus would allow him to spend more time with his family.

He took the job and needed only two years to help the Panthers become a winner.

I was always a bit surprised Conley coaching career just stopped. Did he have other offers after parting way with JT? Also, I never got the story of what transpired, but I just got the impression there was some resentment afterwards.

For some reason I recall a story about JT being miffed about Conley offering some recruits without running it by JT...but I am sure that is not all there is to it. At most, that could have been the breaking point.

Let's just say there was serious disagreement about the types of players OSU should be offering.

My recollection is that the "final straw" was something to do with Tress wanting AJ Hawk and Conley thinking he was a MAC fullback. (And of course on the other side that meant a schollie couldn't be offered to someone Conly wanted... It would stand to reason that would have been Buster Davis, but to be honest, I can't remember. Could have been Bernard Rubble for all I know). At the very least there were some situations that Conley worked very hard on some players that Tress didn't want to offer.

Details and specifics aside, Conley wanted to continue to go after the same types of guys that he did in the late Cooper era, which, at the least, included some high risk, high reward type dudes.

I also remember reading here somewhere that Conley offered a RB from Fla without JT's consent. Not sure how true it is.
