Coach Bill Conley (official thread)

I am a JT believer (except for the stance he takes on the offense side of the ball), but you have to believe there is something wrong when you have as many people leave the football program as we have the last year or so (including Archie). I do not want to see it happen but if JT isn't careful his hard head could cost him his job sooner or later.

I think Archie had an opportunity for a promotion, so he took it. It was tough to lose him, but it was a good career move for him.

Uhhh... Archie was JT's BOSS. Regardless of perception, the head football coach does not run the university, or even the athletic department. Archie took a promotion - plain and simple. As Asst. Athletic Director - the number two man behind Geiger - he had maximized his upward mobility within that office Geiger is firmly entrenched and not going anywhere. In order to advance his career, Archie had two choices - become an AD at another school, or take a position outside of the athletic department, but still within the OSU community. With Archie being the kind of guy he is, the choice was clear.

about Duane

About Duane - I have mixed feelings on him........but i thoroughly enjoy reading his stuff, whether it's off or not, it gives some perspective. I particularly like his stock report, he always offers up a few names that we hadn't been hearing about, and how can you not respect him atleast giving his opinion of our chances? even if he's wrong sometimes?

He's made some good calls, like Ginn, but he's made some terrible calls too, some that really stick with me. Don't get me wrong I'm a fan of his, and respect his analysis and opinions, and feel without a question that his contributions are way more positive and on the mark then negative and off the mark..........but just to add some perspective and objectivity here are some of his bombs that I remember:

1.) Hawk - first off he was FIRST TEAM ALL-STATE AS A SOPHOMORE, had like 150 his last 3 years, anyone who knew ohio HS football knew he was a BEAST, but Duane had him behind D'Andrea, Carpenter, and Kudla at like #13 or #15 in the state, so he didn't exactly offer up any special prognosis here.......and also he kept saying he thought he'd be a BETTER FULLBACK

2.) D'Andrea - said about him in High School,"further along than Katzenmoyer at this point"

3.) Hiley - "the best athlete from Ohio since Charles Woodson"

4.) Datish - he was gushing about Datish, look what he's done (so far)

About Everett, I remember him saying that he just thought that he was too much of an "athlete" and not much of a "football player"...I always thought it was strange that he would kind of single him out like, like he had an agenda, why would he dog a high school kid like that? especially considering that vg says he played through his injury....Everett has proved him wrong seeing significant PT and playing pretty well

Conley gives glimpse into life of OSU coach

DANVILLE ? Former Ohio State University assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Bill Conley spoke at the 63rd Annual Danville Lions Club Raccoon Dinner on Monday night. The well-known coach and motivational speaker has traveled the countryside for over 17 years. His stop in Danville marked a new first to Conley?s long list of accomplishments ? eating raccoon. Over 500 pounds of raccoon was served at the event.

?It did not taste like chicken. It actually tastes like roast beef. It was very good,? said Conley.

During his program Conley discussed what it takes to recruit successfully at the Division I level, while managing to drop a few Michigan and Ohio State jokes along the way.

?This is Buckeye country!? Conley said enthusiastically after finishing one of his jabs at Michigan.

In addition to his stories on recruiting, Conley gave the audience a glimpse of what it was like to play for Woody Hayes. Conley was a walk-on player during the Buckeyes? 10-0 1968 season that clinched both Big Ten and national championship titles.

Copies of Conley?s book, ?Buckeye Bumper Crops,? were on sale throughout the night with a portion of the proceeds going toward the Danville Lions Club. The book is an in-depth version of Conley?s speech, touching on topics such as the recruitment of Eddie George, and the road to the 2002 national championship game.

?It is really a modern history of Ohio State football, which there really isn?t one. Second of all, it is the only book I know that is on recruiting stories and the recruiting philosophy. And the behind-the-scenes stories that nobody would know unless they are actually involved in recruiting,? said Conley.

Met Coach Conley tonight.

Nice guy:

He was with some friends tonight watching the Jackets game. When he had a moment I let him know that I liked his analysis/feedback of games on WCMH as well as his thoughts on recruiting during signing day on ESPN. Of course I had to tell him I was a Husker fan. He went back to his friends. I was surprised that he came back to shake my hand when he decided to call it an evening. He did not have to do it.
